Motorola prepping "last stand" 8 megapixel phone?

While our homeboy Boy Genius may not be quite as well-known for his Moto scoopage as he is for his streak of RIM leaks, we're totally intrigued by his report today that Moto is working on an 8 megapixel phone code named "Dark Project" that's being internally described as the company's "last stand." The unit is said to feature an NVIDIA-sourced chipset for video and 3G graphics (Tegra, perhaps?), an integrated GPS chip, and "probably" running "UIQ 4.0 or higher." It's not confirmed whether it'll have a touchscreen or what the final form factor will be, but release is set for October, and BGR says that if it's a flop the Moto brass will give up and sell the company off. That's a lot of pressure -- but with Moto's struggles lately, we can't say there's much to lose by betting the company.

Their stock is in the tank. With the hundreds of cellphone manufacturers all making virtually the same "stock" product, it's gotta be tough to get out in the lead. What else can a cellphone do nowadays that hasn't already been done? Internet, camera, texting, games, MP3s, videos. Heck, the revolution may be over for the time being.

I wish Moto would stop worrying about the size of their cameras and get on with fixing their OS's. The MotoMagX one is near perfect but they insist on still using Synergy, and UIQ.

Get a 5MP out the door, with music capability, HSDPA (or whatever that fast connection you yanks get), and MotoMagX honed to perfection and they'll have a winner.

Stop f***ing about with low end phones that are exactly the same as the last model with a bit more memory (W375 - W377).

UIQ is necesary as far as LJ OS can NOT support anything related to 3g... and synergy is really good from V6Maxx to RAZR2 v9... anyway... motorola just need to start developing more fones like the Zn5 A1600 and all that thingys...

lol all they have to do....is .....suspence lol srry is creat a phone with grt features....dont mind os cuz yall still buy motos right? exactly...umm i can think abt a few things two trans flash slots wireless better music player faster bluetooth...flashy lights at side and the feature nobody can complain abt having...a port for a flash drive....better ram...2 mp autofocus...1gb standard(cant overdo it) and two bluetooth ports..obviously all of that cant fit into 1 neat package but if any brand phone came out with it woulndnt u buy it?

Relax people, motorola has had its time, the company basically pioneered most of the stuff in the cellphone industry(walkie talkies, first commercial cellphone etc) and if it's time for them to sell out and be at peace, I won't complain. I would guess the executives got greedy and started resting on their laurels again(which they did before too and almost led to the company being bankrupt). The razr saved them last time, but I highly doubt this 8 megapixel wonder is going to make any difference. Nokia/SE phones perform much better, people trust them more and nokia phones atleast have a well established OS (S60).

Who knows what HTC will cook up by then too, and knowing motorola this is probably going to release when someone else announces a 10 MP phone. Its sort of pointless bumping up megapixels without even bothering to get better a lens , carl zeiss on nokia is simply amazing and time will tell how the kodak lens fare on this new moto.

If I had a multibillion compay and had to release a "last stand" phone, I sure as hell wouldn't release it running an almost dead platform (UIQ).

yup i support them anyways ill ask this to any body on the negative side...would u rather a phone that comes all equipped with all the fancy stuff and ur friends say yea im gona buy 1 to ...or a moto that u can mod and the only way 4 them to get it like urs is to ask u to do it? the os is crap but the custimizing is boss

I am at least hoping that Motorola will die later until it releases its first Android OS phone. That will shock the world; if ever Moto's last phone be highly successful using a relatively new OS, then it might have the slightest chance of getting back up again and start anew.
