Unless, of course, you happen to be the current world record holder, who can solve a cube in under 20 seconds. This Lego Mindstorms 'bot was built by ARM, and managed to solve the cube in 25 seconds flat.
The Mindstorms robot was programmed using a Motorola Droid, which runs on an Arm A8 processor clocked at 550MHz, to show the speed of their chips. A specially-built app takes a photo of the cube's side facing the camera, with the commands being sent to the Mindstorms robot over Bluetooth. [ESC via MAKE via Technabob]

Worldwide Converged Mobile Device (Smartphone) Market Grows 56.7% Year Over Year in First Quarter of 2010, Says IDC
07 May 2010
FRAMINGHAM, Mass. May 7, 2010 – Growth of the worldwide converged mobile device market (commonly referred to as smartphones) more than doubled that of the overall mobile phone market in the first quarter, a sign the segment is in high-growth mode again. According to the International Data Corporation (IDC) Worldwide Quarterly Mobile Phone Tracker, vendors shipped a total of 54.7 million units in the first quarter of 2010 (1Q10), up 56.7% from the same quarter a year ago. In contrast, the overall mobile phone market grew 21.7%. Converged mobile devices accounted for 18.8% of all mobile phones shipped in 1Q10, up slightly from 14.4% in 1Q09.
The smartphone market's growth is impressive too when contrasted to the 38% growth in the fourth quarter, which is typically the strongest of the year. This demonstrates the tremendous potential of the market and the depths to which it plunged in the first quarter of last year.
"2010 looks to be another year of large-scale consumer adoption of converged mobile devices," says Ramon Llamas, senior research analyst with IDC’s Mobile Devices Technology and Trends team. "Consumers will gravitate to smartphones not just because the devices themselves look 'cool' and 'slick', but because the overall experience aligns with their individual tastes and demands. Users are seeking – and finding – experiences that are intuitive, seamless, and fun. Already, we've seen what Palm's webOS and Google's Android can do. This year, we expect updates for BlackBerry, Symbian, and Windows Mobile to spark greater smartphone demand with their offerings."
Market Outlook for 2010
Kevin Restivo, senior analyst with IDC's Worldwide Mobile Phone Tracker, said higher smartphone sales this year will be a result of greater awareness, increasingly affordable data plans, and the global economic recovery. "More consumers are aware of smartphones now due to positive referrals from friends and family and manufacturer's mass media campaigns," said. Restivo. "Coupled with increased confidence on the part of consumers, these factors will create a perfect storm of demand for suppliers this year."
Top Five Smartphone Vendors Q1 2010
Nokia firmly maintained its position as the leading smartphone vendor worldwide during 1Q10. In addition to introducing several new models – the C3, C6, and the E5 – Nokia announced its first Symbian^3 model, the N8. This, and other Symbian^3 devices, are expected to launch in the fourth quarter of this year. According to CEO Olli-Pekka Kallasvuo, Symbian^3 will be more intuitive and fun for end users, and on par with other competitive offerings available on the market.
Research In Motion kept its position as the number two smartphone vendor worldwide on continued growth of its popular BlackBerry devices. Key to its success were its BlackBerry Curve 8520 and BlackBerry Bold 9700, as well as stronger consumer adoption. Co-CEOs Mike Lazaridis and Jim Balsillie recently unveiled the company's new BlackBerry OS 6.0, which promises a smoother and more interactive user interface.
Apple more than doubled its shipments from a year ago, with more iPhones arriving outside its home territory of North America. CEO Steve Jobs announced the latest operating system update, enabling multi-tasking, folders, enhanced email, iBooks for consumers, and iAd, a mobile advertising platform, for developers. A fourth generation iPhone is expected to arrive this summer.
HTC posted high double-digit growth to start off the year, driven primarily by its growing stable of Android-powered products including the Hero, Droid Eris, and MyTouch. The company shows no signs of slowing down, having announced several new devices, including the first WiMAX Android phone, the EVO 4G, slated to launch later this year. HTC also remains committed to Windows Mobile devices, with the HD2 receiving a warm reception and Windows Phone 7 devices expected to launch before the end of the year.
Motorola, having stormed back into the smartphone space in the fourth quarter of 2009, followed up with a new milestone in its short history of shipping Android devices. Now that the DROID and CLIQ (known as the Milestone and DEXT respectively outside the United States) both have a full quarter of availability, the company followed up with six additional devices. The company expects to launch 20 different models and ship 12–14 million Android smartphones this year.

Motorola MT820 3D phone caught on video; expect June release
May 7th, 2010 by gaurav
Last month, we told about this leaked Motorola Android phone, which allegedly uses Motorola’s dual screen 3D technology. Now, we have more on that. Chinese website IT168 got hold of this promotional video, which shows Motorola MT820 in action (IT168 is calling this device MT810, does not make a difference).
This video shows CCTV chairman using CMMB handset television function to watch Soccer World Cup matches, and this video must have been the part of promotions which will be carried out during World Cup.
MT820 has been code named “North Sea,” and it will come equipped with latest Android OS, 5 MP camera with auto focus and LED flash, 720P HD video recording ability. It is expected to release soon in China, sometime around World Cup (i.e. June).

Video is in Chinese, was not able to understand anything (Anyone.. please help with the translation), but it does give an idea of the device.

Android Shakes Up U.S. Smartphone Market
First quarter 2010 information from The NPD Group's Mobile Phone Track reveals a shift in the smartphone market, as Android OS edged out Apple's OS for the number-two position behind RIM.
PORT WASHINGTON, NEW YORK, MAY 10, 2010 - The Android operating system (OS) continued to shake up the U.S. mobile phone market in the first quarter (Q1) of 2010, moving past Apple to take the number-two position among smartphone operating systems, according to The NPD Group, a leading market research company. NPD’s wireless market research reveals that based on unit sales to consumers last quarter the Android operating system moved into second position at 28 percent behind RIM’s OS (36 percent) and ahead of Apple’s OS (21 percent).
“As in the past, carrier distribution and promotion have played a crucial role in determining smartphone market share,” said Ross Rubin, executive director of industry analysis for NPD. “In order to compete with the iPhone, Verizon Wireless has expanded its buy-one-get-one offer beyond RIM devices to now include all of their smartphones.”
Strong sales of the Droid, Droid Eris, and Blackberry Curve via these promotions helped keep Verizon Wireless’s smartphone sales on par with AT&T in Q1. According to NPD’s Mobile Phone Track, smartphone sales at AT&T comprised nearly a third of the entire smartphone market (32 percent), followed by Verizon Wireless (30 percent), T-Mobile (17 percent) and Sprint (15 percent).
“Recent previews of BlackBerry 6, the recently announced acquisition of Palm by HP, and the pending release of Windows Phone 7 demonstrates the industry’s willingness to make investments to address consumer demand for smartphones and other mobile devices,” Rubin said. “Carriers continue to offer attractive pricing for devices, but will need to present other data-plan options to attract more customers in the future.”
The continued popularity of messaging phones and smartphones resulted in slightly higher prices for all mobile phones, despite an overall drop in the number of mobile phones purchased in the first quarter. The average selling price for all mobile phones in Q1 reached $88, which is a 5 percent increase from Q1 2009. Smartphone unit prices, by comparison, averaged $151 in Q1 2010, which is a 3 percent decrease over the previous year.
Methodology: The NPD Group compiles and analyzes mobile device sales data based on more than 150,000 completed online consumer research surveys each month. Surveys are based on a nationally balanced and demographically-representative sample, and results are projected to represent the entire population of U.S. consumers. Note: Sales figures do not include corporate/enterprise mobile phone sales.

First Look: Android 2.2 (Froyo) with Flash Player 10.1
Ginny Mies, PC World
May 20, 2010 11:13 pm
[ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yAZYSVr2Bhc&feature=player_embedded]Android 2.2 Official Video[/ame]
I got an advance look at Google's latest treat for Android phones, Android 2.2 (more deliciously known as Froyo) on the Nexus One. Announced this morning at Google I/O in San Franisco, the update will initially be available to Motorola Droid and Nexus One owners in June. Android users will definitely be happy with this update, which delivers faster performance, tethering/mobile hotspot and of course, Flash support.
Flash Player 10.1: Great for Watching Video
At last, full Flash support has finally arrived on Android. Overall, the whole experience is quite good, but I encountered a couple of issues in my hands-on. Video playback looked excellent on the Nexus One's screen. I watched a couple of trailers on the Warner Brothers' site and was impressed with how smooth playback the was.
Flash support brings some big gaming potential to the Android platform. I tested the South Park Studios' make-your-own avatar feature and was amazed with how speedy the game was. Other games, like a baseball game on Kongregate ran smoothly as well. Farmville fans will also be delighted to learn that the ridiculously-addictive social networking game is Flash-based as well. Now you'll never get away from your farm.
Of course, not all sites were so fast. While the kid's educational site Ecoda Zoo looked gorgeous on the Nexus One, it moved painfully slow. I tried playing a couple of beloved Flash games that aren't optimized for mobile and was disappointed that I couldn't play some of them without a keyboard. For example, with Dino Run, I had to press the "space" bar to do a certain action, but I couldn't access the touch keyboard (the keyboard only comes up when you're in a typing field).
Interestingly enough, there's a shortcut on one of the homescreens to a page with recommended Flash-enabled sites and games including South Park Studios, BBC, Sony Pictures, Armor Games and more. TechCrunch dug up the lists for both the Nexus One and the Droid and pointed out that the two are different. In fact, the list for the Droid is much shorter than the Nexus One's.
Missing from all of this Flash action, of course, is Hulu. I was really disappointed when I tried-and ultimately failed-to watch an episode of "30 Rock" on the Nexus One. According to Adobe, Hulu does not own distribution rights for their content on mobile devices and therefore cannot stream video to smartphones. With no Hulu on the iPad and no Hulu on your Android phone, isn't time for Hulu to develop an app? Let's hope so.
Android 2.2: Faster Performance, Wi-Fi HotSpot and Tethering
While Flash Player is clearly the biggest update, there are definitely a few gems in the update. I did some side-by-side tests with a Nexus One running 2.1 and right off the bat, I noticed how much faster 2.2 is. Native apps launched quicker and scrolling through Web pages felt smoother on my 2.2 Nexus One.
I'm not sure how the carriers will handle this, but I was able to turn my T-Mobile Nexus One into a mobile hotspot via T-Mobile without any issue. Tethering also worked without any issue with T-Mobile.
One of the biggest weaknesses with Android was the inability to download apps to your microSD card; you had to resort to using your precious internal memory. Now, with the 2.2 update, you can store your apps on a microSD card.
Finally, there are also a few subtle cosmetic tweaks in the update. On the homescreen, there are three permanent shortcuts to the dialer app, the app menu and the browser. Éclair (2.0/2.1) only has a shortcut to the Menu app. Other than that, 2.2 looks pretty similar to 2.1.
The next treat for Android fans is Gingerbread, coming in Q4 of 2010. What do you want to see in the next version of Android? Leave your answer in the comments below.

Android-Based Motorola XT502 Emerges
Might be called Greco

Mobile phone maker Motorola seems set to show to the world that it can do a nice work on the Android side of the market, as a new, yet-unreleased handset from the company has just emerged into the wild, supposedly based on Google's highly popular Android operating system, namely the Motorola XT502. This is not the first nor the only such device the company is expected to bring to the market during the ongoing year, but it should give it a helpful hand in its attempt to conquer the users' hearts.
The new Motorola XT502 was spotted over at the Bluetooth SIG and brought to light in a recent article from UnwiredView. Reportedly, the new mobile phone is expected to arrive on the market with a touchscreen display, while boasting quad-band GSM connectivity and support for tri-band UMTS (850 / 1900 / 2100 MHz) frequencies. Moreover, the device should include WiFi (802.11b/g) capabilities, as well as Bluetooth 2.0, in addition to the USB 2.0 connectivity (via a microUSB port, most probably).
Other specifications of the newly spotted Motorola Android device include a 3.5mm headset jack, along with built-in A-GPS receiver. While a photo snapper is certainly present on the handset's back, as can be seen in the image attached to this article, no specific details on it emerged for the time being, it seems. We should also mention that no info on the Android version it runs under is available either, yet UnwiredView notes that Froyo seems out of the question, given the available image with the phone.
Another piece of information that emerged from the Blutooth SIG is that the handset might land on the market as the Motorola Greco. Moreover, given the handset vendor's history with devices like XT701 and XT800, there are great chances the new Motorola XT502 might land on the market in China, though its appearance on other markets around the world is not out of the question (it packs support for European and North American 3G bands).

Motorola Launching 2GHz Android Phone in 2010?
We already knew that Motorola had plans to release 2-4 new Android smartphones by the end of the year, but what we didn’t know is that they are hoping to make one of those the most ridiculously powerful devices ever. Moto CEO Sanjay Jha, snuck in the gem of all gems yesterday in his speech at the Executives Club of Chicago, by announcing a 2GHz powered Android smartphone which should be released before the end of 2010. Wow.
Another Moto big wig also chimed in with a few more of the device’s details…
…this new phone is intended to incorporate everything that is technologically possible in a smartphone today. It will be based on Android, and include, like the iPhone 4, a gyroscope and add an Nvidia Tegra-based graphics processor with full Flash 10.1 hardware acceleration…

Motorola Confirms 2GHz Phone Plans
posted Friday, 3:39 PM by Eric M. Zeman
Motorola CEO Sanjay Jha recently said that the company plans to bring a handset to market by the end of the year powered by a 2GHz processor. Motorola spokesperson Juli Burda has confirmed for Phone Scoop that this is indeed fact, and the company will introduce a handset with a 2GHz processor in board later this year. Neither Jha nor Burda provided any more information about the device. Many of today's high-end smartphones are powered by 1GHz chips, with some of them coming from Qualcomm. Qualcomm has publicly announced plans to introduce 1.5GHz Snapdragon processors (SnapDragon dual-core QSD8672, for example), but hasn't said anything about 2GHz processors yet.

Motorola Droid is most popular Android device
Written by Andre "DVDBack23" Yoskowitz @ 03 Jul 2010 13:18
According to a new metrics report from mobile advertising giant AdMob, the Motorola Droid is the most popular Android device, followed by the HTC Hero.
It is important to note that the data is based on 12.7 million Android phones as of May 31st. The MyTouch 3G Slide and HTC EVO 4G were released in early June and are therefore not included.
The Droid, which launched last November, has 22 percent market share, with the Hero having 16 percent. Rounding out the top 5 are the HTC Magic, Dream (G1) and Droid Eris, each with between 8-10 percent share. Google's flagship Nexus One has just 2 percent share.
Next month, the metrics report is expected to show the HTC EVO 4G creeping into the top 5, given extremely high sales in its first month.
Currently, Motorola and HTC control 83 percent of the hardware market, and both companies have already promised a plethora of new devices for the rest of the year.
