is it possible to change the firmware without backing stuff up?cause i'm a total noob at this stuff and the simpler the better besides since this is a backup phone i can experiment with it now.

Yes, you can flash your phone without making a back up.
Remember to flash first the NoRsa bootloader before flashing the MP.

[help] bootloader errors?
I need patched CG31 for 06.2A & 06.2DP = .sbf files (not .smg file), please help me!

Try getting Sbf re-calc. I guess it will help creating the .sbf file.
