FINALLY!! Opera Mini Working on Tmobile W490!!
After 2 replacements and a couple weeks of playing with it, I have finally gotten Opera Mini, Google Maps, and unlocked Web Sessions on the W490.
As always start by installing the drivers from motodev, and back up all files before changing them. Also be sure you are subscribed to tmobiles 5.99 package or none of this will work anyway.
First to enable the websessions menu they blocked out.
Download P2k Commander 4.9.E from the downloads section.
Open p2k commander and when its done loading up connect your phone, once recognized click on the seem menu and then functions. It will bring up a menu of a ton of different things you can edit.
Scroll down to the line that says "MENU:Webaccess>websessions" and double click the box to put a check in it.
Scroll down to the line "MENU:Webaccess>websessions>menu set default" and double click it also if it doesnt already have a check mark.
Do the same for the line "MENU:Webaccess>internet" it may already be checked. if not double click the box to check it.
Now hit write seems and close out the funtions menu, then in the drop down up top change to the /a p2k phone system. Give it a minute and open the "a" folder. Delete the websession file near the bottom. Then replace it with the one attached to this post.
Now go back up top and browse to mobile/certs/root/x509/kjava/
and delete the file named j2me_domain_registry.sm
Reboot your phone, fun and apps, tools, webaccess, web sessions, and set the new "Java Session" as default. I have confirmed t-zones, opera mini, google maps, texting, and mms all working in harmony =P
Just incase you get the message that browser setup is incomplete simply make a new one inside the phone using these EXACT settings:

I hope this gets the ball rolling on the W490, it really is a great phone. Good luck!
Now its just a matter of finding the best running version of opera, currently using 4.0 for the K1, but its a bit sluggish. If anyone finds a better one please let me know.Last edited by socalledsin; 11-27-2007 at 10:49 AM.

Do you have the 19.99$ a month plan for the internet on your phone or does this make it so you can use the internet for free
- 11-23-2007, 06:17 PM #3
Just the $5.99 plan.
- 11-23-2007, 06:18 PM #4
oh so you could use the real internet before this mod
- 11-23-2007, 08:25 PM #5
tmobile had the ports blocked for any java apps, so you had to use the crappy default browser.

This is the news I've been waiting for. Time to order a W490!
Just one question, though: I have recommended deleting that domain_registry.sm file to allow "Ask Once Per App" in the permissions for added-on Java apps, and have been informed that doing so screws up some built-in Java apps (like music players). Has that happened with the W490? To be honest, I probably wouldn't care myself since I don't listen to music on my phone (I have a PDA with two SD slots for that), but others might.Last edited by Telyx; 11-24-2007 at 05:45 PM.

It did screw up a few things. It corrupted the demos, which lets you delete them. woot! On the downside it also corrupts the email app that never worked anyway, as well as the digital audio player and aim program. I didn't mind this as i find the built in music player to be tons more useful than the digital audio player app. It shouldn't be too hard to find a replacement java aim client as well.
I also wanted to add that so far the best version of opera i have tried is the older low memory version 3. There is a link for it if you goto operamini.com on the phone.

Cool. I'm not concerned about AIM or the music player, and for email I either use T-Mobile's "mirror" email or tether to my PDA to download from my ISP. (I also use the Gmail app.)
The newer version of Opera Mini takes longer to load, I think, than previous versions. I can't remember what enhancements it adds--but it also doesn't let you delete the bookmarks from your home page, and there are some pretty useless ones there.
edit 11/29-- socalledsin, please check your PM-- I goofed my W490's skin up and would appreciate your help... I didn't back the original up first!
edit again 11/29-- thanks a bunch!--it's working fine again. No more modding on this thing for a while... 'til my heart slows back down, at least. The moral of that story, folks, is that 176x220 skins that work fine on a RAZR V3r don't work with the W490! Back up your original first--don't be a doof like me!Last edited by Telyx; 11-29-2007 at 07:36 AM.

You said deleting the j2me_domain_registry.sm file corrupted the demos. How will that affect the faves app?
- 12-05-2007, 08:23 PM #10
It had no effect on the myfaves app. I also found that the aim app is in fact still working. The only things affected by deleting the file are the demos and the mobile email app.

Is this the only way to get access to the java apps in moto mid manager. I'm really itching to mod this phone, but without a backup its kinda discouraging.

I have not messed with mmm on this phone so i dont know, ive only messed with p2kcommander. You do not have to delete the file, but if you dont it will constantly ask for permission when accessing the internet.

Save a copy of that domain_registry file, and if deleting it messes up MyFaves or anything else, you can always put it back with P2KCommander.
MotoMidMan appears to only look in the c\mobile\kjava folder, but apps in the W490 are installed to a subfolder of \kjava called \installed, so until MotoMidMan is updated, it probably won't do much more than put apps in almost the right folder. Past experience with other phones (V195, V3r) indicates that MotoMidMan won't be able to change the permissions for Java apps anyway.
And the W490's skin can be modded to some extent with MotoSkin. There are three .ski files in the Alkali folder; I haven't tried messing with Alkali_cli.ski or Alkali_uisounds.ski, but Alkali.ski seems to respond well--except that I can't change the transparency of the text (provider name, soft button labels) like I could with the skins in my V3r.Motorola DEFY (T-Mobile)

You may need to check that you followed all the instructions. I have done this on 3 W490's now, all working perfectly.
