[Guide] Kmobile Tools Intro and Install

KMobileTools is a nice KDE-based application that allows to control mobile phones with your PC. It handles full SMS control, dialing calls, phonebook, and phone status monitoring. It's also integrated with the KDE environment, so it can be embedd in Kontact, or import/export from and to KAddressBook. It has been tested on Motorola, Nokia, Siemens, Sony Ericsson and LG mobile phones. Anyway each AT Command compliant device should be well supported.

This guide will show you how to install and how to use this program. Again, i do not take credit for any of this guide as it is all from various sites. All i do take credit for is putting it together.

This program is designed for KDE desktop environment but i have successfully installed on Ubuntu 6.10. Using the add/remove functions.

The main stable download (pictured) is located here:
    Code:
    http://download.berlios.de/kmobiletools/kmobiletools-0.4.3.3.tar.bz2
You will have to compile this version. Instructions located in "INSTALL".

There is a test version available in a debian format at:
    Code:
    http://download.berlios.de/kmobiletools/kmobiletools_0.5_beta1-1_i386.deb
The debian package is easiest but this guide is not written for it. Once you have compile and/or installed the program you can start her up. Connect your phone and run the program.

If the phone is not located automatically then go to configure main settings and put,
    Code:
    /dev/ttyACM0
    as the mobile phone device.

Click ok and the reinitialize GSM device your phone should be detected and you can start. The program is pretty easy to use so i wont explain it.

Any questions ask here and i will answer them to the best of my knowledge.

NOTE: I have only tested this on Ubuntu 6.10 with an L6 and Razr V3, i do not know if your phone will work.

    Easy way to install:

    Code:
    sudo aptitude install kmobiletools
Tested in Feisty (has latest version).

Edit: I don't think this integrates with Kontact. I know that Kandy does, but I have no idea how good that is. Kontact is supposed to be able to use KitchenSync/OpenSync in 3.5.7 I believe, but if not, I know that KDE 4 will make this a hell of a lot easier!

i've got ubuntu 8.10. any idea why it says "An error occurred while initializing mobile phone device.
Check your configuration and try again." whenever i start the program? i'm terribly new at this, btw, so any help is very much appreciated.

Any word on a similar app for KDE 4? I don't want to have anything Qt3 on my system, so the only option I'm seeing is Wammu (GTK+), but it fails in epic proportions (updating the phonebook basically cleared my SIM).
