New OS for Motorola Tundra VA76r?
I just got a new Motorola Tundra VA76r. It's really cool. I like how rugged it is, how simple it is, etc. It's unlocked, and I'm using it with my T-Mobile service.
What I don't like about it is the AT&T branding. Not only is the branding bad, but it's got all these promotions for PTT. If you push the big button on the left side of the phone, it says, "open the phone and click to enable PTT". Well, T-Mo doesn't have PTT. I would like that "feature" to be gone. Likewise, there's a PTT icon on the home screen, and I don't see how to delete it. There's also ATT branding all over it. I don't want it.
Has anyone gotten a generic image?
Even better, has anyone gotten an open source solution for this? Maybe be able to build my own image? I would like to change a few things.
Is there any possibility of installing Android on one of these?
Thanks

Android is not possible but you can change all what you want because its running Linux
just look for moddingguides V8 or U9 its very similar to VA76r

Ok, I'll look for those guides. I didn't know which hardware it was equivalent to.
I wish it could run Android. Or someone would make a real open-source Linux distribution for it, that I can build. But if I have some mods it will be good enough.
Oh one other thing I would love to do is to be able to use it for tethering, to my Ubuntu laptop. I wonder if I can do it.

you can see and dowload the "open" VA76r sourcecode at developers.motorola.com

Ah, so I might try that. I assume I would be able to compile it and flash it on to my Tundra? That would be fantastic. I would then be able to make the changes I want:
- Get rid of ATT branding
- Get rid of PTT stuff
- Use the PTT button for something else
- There are some truly annoying UI things, like how many keys I need to press to delete an SMS, and make it faster to use the camera / video quickly with the phone closed.
- I would like to get rid of some of the non-functioning apps, like the ATT mapping app, which I can't use.
- I would like to figure out some reasonable way to do tethering if possible.

The only open source parts are the kernel and some daemons/apps. The Qt interfaces are closed source. ATT branding can be removed by editing the file system

but if theres an sbf/shx the fw can splits and mountet on Linux
its very similar to V8 and the modding guides are helpful.

Yes, but that's not the source code

That's unfortunate. I hope someday someone will do a full open-source replacement for their firmware.
Right now it's really annoying. For example, in the contacts, the first half dozen items are ATT informatoin, ATT "my account", etc. Well, I don't have ATT so those do me no good, and yet they are locked and I can't delete them.
I hate owning something and yet not having control over it.
Btw, why couldn't Android somehow run on it?Last edited by AndroidMoto; 04-11-2010 at 01:03 PM.

Porting it would be a huge mess, no one would do it that i know of. Also, the ATT contacts are not hardcoded, they're stored in some config files or in a db i dont quite remember

Android needs much more ram to work... i dont think its enough with swap. and as OCM say no one will port Android to Motomagx devices... but feel free and start with porting

Well, never say never, dear tomauswurstdorf

If it'd be done right, considering the HUGE waste of time, work, money, women, beer, *insertanythingofimportancehere*, you might be able to get it to work, though it'll probably take ages for the phone to boot up.-.-

I started a thread today in the Mod YOUR Other Moto section in regards to deleting the AT&T phone numbers in my VA76r. I don't mean to double post. But can someone give me some guidelines as to how to delete those phone numbers ?
Thanks, Arfy
