Moto XT5 upgrade to 2.2
Hi all,
Had my phone since end of Jan '11, bought a 32GB SD with the intention of saving apps to the SD card only to find out I can't.
Apparently if I upgrade to 2.2 I'll be able to do so.
Searched internet heaps for instructions but found loads of conflicting info.
If I upgrade to 2.2 am I opening the door to too many issues? (eg: bad battery life etc)
Does anyone have SIMPLE and CONSISE (I'm not phone-savvy at all) instructions on how I can do the upgrade please?
OR... am I doomed to be stuck with 2.1?
Your help is apprecaited.
Kind Regards

Honestly, I have no idea what you were trying to say.
Your sentence was very difficult to decifer and understand.
I'm assuming you're trying to give a smart/witty reply because I'm a newbie to your forum which is fair enough, but I was asking a genuine question - if you don't want to help, thats fine, but just say that and I'll go somewhere else and ask.
Thanks
Kind Regards

Hello!
Welcome to M3, we actually AIM to help as most people as possible, I have seen that you are not to understand what my friend (Moderator of the forum too) said (Pzyduck), my point is if that you did not understand it is not to become hostile with a user. Also, the Moderator's main language is NOT english (As stated by his living city *Chepes - La Rioja - Argentina*)
--TRANSLATION--
I believe he is trying to say that you would be to POSSIBLY stay in 2.1, that is all.
PS: We DO NOT have anything against new users (Noobs, or Newbs in the internet), they are treated the same as I am, we do not base people on their knowledgement, God created us equal, and equal we ALL are.
Once again, welcome to M3 and I (And the M3 team) wish you a happy stay!

Upgrading XT5 to Android 2.2
I expect that the original poster has given up on this issue, but for the sake of the next person to come along, I will give it a try:
First, let me say that for some devices, I do not think that moving apps to a removable card is a good idea. It is better to have sufficient internal memory and leave the external card for holding data. Android itself is not really designed to hold huge amounts of Apps. It is better to remove unnecessary Apps as soon as practical. I know that some people will not find that a suitable answer, but it is my starting point.
Next, since you are the original owner of the device, the first thing you would want to do would be to ask about an offical upgrade from Motorola and your service provider. We can save a bit of time regarding this by saying that in Oct. 2010, Motorola announced plans for for Android upgrades as far as to the end of 2011 and going up to Android 2.2, and it shows no intention of upgrading your XT5 past Android 2.1.
https://supportforums.motorola.com/c...?view=overview
It is possible that they (the service provider and Motorola) might change their minds and upgrade the device. It would be a good idea if you could promote the idea of an upgrade within your user community.
However, if you wish to use Android 2.2 (or even 2.3 now), that is not the end of the possibilities.
Your XT5 is a variation of the "Commtiva Z71" design which was used by a number of phone makers, and by Motorola for its "Cliq XT", "Quench", "XT502" and a few more products. If you check on this forum, in the "Cliq XT" area
Motorola Cliq XT
you will find discussion of "CyanogenMod 7.1.0" which is an independent port of Android 2.2 for various devices, and it is running on the "Cliq XT / Quench". This is NOT an official Motorola development and you will LOSE some features, mainly to do with "Motoblur", but you will be able to run most of the supported Apps that other Android 2.2 devices can run.
That is all I am going to post. Someone else will have to correct what I have said or add more, or answer future questions.

CliqXT and XT5 are not the same, he will get stuck in a bootloop.

XT3 v. XT5
There is a hardware difference between the XT3 and the XT5. The XT5 has a 5MP camera instead of the 3.15MP camera (which is common for most of the "Commtiva Z71" devices. Still, I am surprised Motorola made incompatible system software.
Interesting. NO! NO! NOT INTERESTING! I have far too much to do right now!

Someone recently posted this link to an instruction page to load CM6.1.2 on the Quench XT5. This seems risky to me. "DJGHOSTS3V3N" is pretty reliable too and if he said that a boot-loop happens, then I am not surprised if it does. But it does seem to be reasonably confirmed.

I am adding it to this topic on the assumption that it works, but I have not tested it.

Do it. Just simply make a backup, just in case.

waggish posted this a while back:
Roms 2.1 and Kernel Source Code (XT502)
XT502 is definitely a different animal than Quench/CliqXT. Primarily for Asian market, but they can pop up anywhere. Moto pulled that same-name stunt with the V3/V3r/V3re - different phones entirely BUT THEY ALL LOOKED THE SAME. Urgh.
