[How-To] Replace or Restore apps USING ROOT EXPLORER
This is how I push apps to my system to make them a permanent part of any ROM. For example, If you're using a BLUR ROM but you don't want the BLUR music player (CMP.apk) you can replace it with the Stock Eclair music player (Music.apk) or any other music app for that matter. Steps below.
*Changing Read/Write permissions is only available in the PAID version of Root Explorer (Google it if absolutely necessary)*
Breakdown:
Acquire the apps you want OR DELETED.
Place them on SD card.
Open Root Explorer.
Go to /sdcard where you placed the .apk files.
Press the menu button to 'Multi-Select' and copy. (Or individually long press and copy)
Select the .apk files you placed on your SD card.
Go back to the " / " folder. (Press the [...] dots at the top)
Open the 'system' folder.
Open the 'app' folder. (You should now be in /system/app)
MOUNT AS R/W! (By default you are mounted as R/O)
Paste the .apk files.
REMEMBER THE NAMES! (To change permissions)
Scroll to each .apk and long press individually. (Options should pop up)
Scroll to and press 'Permissions'.
New screen should say (ALONG THE TOP) Read - Write - Execute (ALONG THE SIDE) User - Group - Others.
Change the .apk permissions to match all your other system app permission. (Check READ for ALL. Check WRITE for USER. Leave Execute UNCHECKED)
Press OK.
Go to phone Home Screen.
Reboot.
*Hope this solves some issues out there*Last edited by VontaelP; 09-14-2010 at 12:59 AM.

dude!! how awesome is this? i was just getting ready to comb the forum for this info... thanks for making it easy on me! hahaha
*edit*
ok, so I followed this (i think, at least.. i am a n00b afterall), and here's the situation:
I was able to safely remove double-twist and install a different music player prior to this, so I thought I was doing it correctly, but apparently I missed something:
I'm running barely blurred and I wanted to replace launcher pro with a different launcher. I deleted launcher pro, installed and set permissions for the new launcher and then restarted but got stuck at the boot animation. Thank God for Nandroid, or i'd have been FUBAR. Can you offer any advice? thanks in advance!Last edited by supreme313; 09-13-2010 at 03:22 AM.

If you successfully replaced double twist with another music app then you DID follow the steps correctly.
Word of advice when replacing the entire home:
If it hangs at the M logo (or any part of boot) pull the battery. Wait a few minutes then try again. Give your phone some internal time to refresh, Especially if you filled your home screens before reboot. (I left mine blank, then rebooted)
*Just because you go to sleep doesnt mean you wake up refreshed. If someone wakes you up too early with more work to do, more often than not you'll be stuck in a daze*Try Google search. You'd be surprised how many answers are floating around on the internet.

whew.. glad to know i'm not a total idiot! lol
yeah, I was able to replace pretty much every app that I wanted to, with the exception of launcher pro and the gallery.. for some reason, my pictures look really crappy in the gallery of "barely blurred". I tried putting in a different gallery and it didn't show up. lucky I "moved" MediaGallery.apk to the sd, instead of deleting it
thanks for the advice... i guess i'll just try and try again whilst quietly thanking god for nandroid backup.

Thanks a lot bud. This is going to make my life easier. I only knew how to rename and remove apk's. Now I know what I just learned here and also that it can extract files from zip files directly to the sdcard. So I'll depend less from my PC to push apps into my rom.

I always used SUFBS. This is how I do it.
1) Find the apps you want and put them on the SD card.
2) Fire up SUFBS.
3) Mount mtdblock3 as r/w by pressing the little "s" towards the top of the screen.
4) Copy the apps from the SD card.
5) Paste them into /system/app.

This could have been easily explained in a few steps but I like to give others as much detail as possible. That way it reduces the amount of questions asked. When you get it right the first time it makes life a lot easier for a lot of people. Thanks for posting your method.
