There's a missing definition (that I want to know :P)
What does it mean "to brick a phone"?
- 02-25-2007, 04:58 PM #32
A phone is bricked (becomes a brick) when it's rendered unbootable.
I think we can distinguish 3 main categories here:
- "Soft" brick, usually caused by a bad flash or trivial error, i.e. flashing a non-RSA removed LP (CG4+CG7) over a RSA-removed firmware. These types of brick can be fixed by flashing again with whatever is appropriate to the problem, (new MP, CG7, ...)
- "Hard" brick, caused by seriously screwing up the phone, that can only be repaired by 'heavy' methods such as PDS repair or testpointing.
- Paperweight, a phone bricked beyond repair.
I'm assuming it is possible to paperweight a phone, since my experience is (fortunately) only based on "soft" brickings.Last edited by raydeejay; 02-25-2007 at 05:03 PM.

A Good Post and a Bad Question
Hi,
Its a very informative and good post, but i've got a very bad question...
What is RSA? and what happens if RSA is removed (good things and bad things after RSA removal) and is RSA required for normal functioning of the L7??
- 03-02-2007, 04:53 AM #36
RSA is a cryptographic algorithm, in this case it's used to check some Code Groups (CG) against the digital signature contained in CG7. This is to prevent tampering with the firmware, the phone won't boot unless the code is correctly signed.
'Removing RSA' means that the firmware is patched so it skips the digital signature verification. This allows us to modify the CG1 to do things like change the keypad lock/unlock combination, or modify the bootscreen. You can find more information in the sticky post about removing RSA.Last edited by raydeejay; 03-04-2007 at 07:06 AM. Reason: typo
