sign in error- anyone have a answer?
A little long sorry,,,
Ok here is the deal I hope one of you smart guys can help me out.
My buddy bought a G1 last week from the T-Mobile store got the data plan put on his account, signed in no problem. Played with it a few days then sold it to me, I am a T-Mobile customer too but I dont have the data plan.
I put my chip in turn on no problems, except it keeps giving me a error about not able to sign in, I am in a hotel on business so I turn on the wifi switch no problems surfing the net or anything but I still get the error.
I figure out it is becaue it is trying to sign in to his gmail account so I go in and reset the phone it restarts I create a account it connects all is good.
I get back home today and my wife wants the phone, I swap chips reset the phone so she can have her her own gmail,,, and now I get the unable to connect with google servers error?
So I cant get past the initial log on now anyone have a answer on how to get past this?
Since niether me or the wife have a data plan did it work for me while I was in the hotel because it connected to the free wifi on its own or is there another issue?

When I first bought mine, until I was "registered" on the 3G network, it wouldnt let me get signed in. I think that since you arent on the data plan, you will have troubles.

Jack does it register the phone or the phone number? I ask because until I switched out the sim cards it worked fine which makes no sense to me, I wonder if I put a sim card that has the data plan, (like my buddy that I bought the phone from) re-register or just log into it with my gmail account, then sitch the chips out if it will work OK?
I dont norrmally MOD my stuff so I am not sure if this is a stupid question but could I get around all this if I just jailbroke the phone? I just need past that 1st freaking screen, I am always around a wifi signal if wanted to surf /check the weather or whatever.

Ok .... I had the same issue... the only diff. is that I wasn't changing sims back and forth.... the reason you can’t log in is because you must have some form of internet access(edge or 3G) via the network (not wifi) so you will need to add that to your account at least temporarily, then get it taken off.
If you're still not getting the network do the following as it worked for me.
This guide is going to show you how to do a "hard" factory reset from the initial setup screen/activation screen. (This is not the same as doing a factory reset from the G1's settings menu. T-mobile had me do that and it didn't work.)
1)
With the G1 on, pull out the battery and remove the SIM card.
2)
Wait about 10 seconds and replace the battery without the SIM.
3)
Now hold down the Home(house) key and the Power(red/end) button for about 25 sec. Note: the phone will begin to turn on. Do not release the buttons until you see a triangle with and exclamation point in it and a small g1.
4)
Now open the keyboard and press the "ALT" and "L" buttons together. A menu will appear with a few options.
5)
The option that you want is the one that says "wipe data/factory reset". Now press "ALT" and "W" together. Note: when I did this on my unit, the wipe only took seconds.
6)
Do not attempt to power off the phone. Without touching anything else, pull out the battery.
7)
Replace the SIM card and the battery. Now turn the unit back on and follow the onscreen instructions to set-up the phone. You should be able to use the Gmail account that you already made for your wife but if not, try making a new one.
If you were able to get the wifi connected during setup at the hotel, you can try it again, but I really think that it was a glitch. I recommend temporarily getting a data plan even if it’s only for an hour or two until the setup is complete.
Please let me know if this helped at all...
