G1- Wireless Controls

I am having major problems with wireless controls.
I have been using wi-fi and everything was fine until last week.
Wifi- is checked when I go into wireless settings screen is black and error message Activity Wi-fi settings(in application settings) is not responding. Gives me two options wait and force close. wait - does not do anything.
I see wifi signal is good on the phone.
Called t-mobile they are saying I need data plan- I know I do not need data plan to catch wifi. It worked without data plan for 3 weeks.
Any clue? Ideas?
Please help, I really like this phone and do not want to switch to other phone.

Yes. It did not work. I also tried to take out sim card . Could it be due to recent update to the phonesent by t-mobile?

yes, could be possible. Tell that to T-mobile people, hopefully they will agree to send in a replacement.

Have you tryed doing a data reset? my friend had problems with the WiFi an he did a data reset an the problem went away. You can try this but remember you will lose all data saved on your phone.
