RC 8, RC 30 or Dev Phone

First of all: Yes I have seached Google and the forum, but I didn't find any satisfying information.

What is the difference between the three versions, which one do you recommend?

I found out so far:
that rc8 is for UK and rc30 is for us. rc8 is said to have no myfaves and thus no unwanted sms to 453 (I have rc30 ota til now and have no 453 messages so far, even in germany, france, poland and czechia; maybe that's because I am on a german carrier that is allied to german t-mobile). I have read that there are some apps on the market, that can't be accessed from the UK android market.

Is there any further difference? Are units in maps and other apps european (km instead of miles) in the UK version? Any idea, what is the difference between a rooted rc30/rc8 to devphone?

Is it really necessary to format the sd-card to FAT for the downgrade? Will the apps and all the data stay on the phone after down- and upgrade?

can you switch from rc8 to rc30 to devphone and back? Any idea if you can switch to the future localized versions (I am looking forward to the german version in QI/2009)?

I have seen, that there are different versions available. Jesus... and some more. wich one do you recommend?

Maybe if someone (living sword???) has a detailed answer, we could do a sticky out of this thred. I guess there will be more users, asking theese questions, now that we can jailbreak rc30 ota.


edit: more news I found out, thanks to living sword:

1. You can switch between modded RC30 and RC8 without any hassles, if you don't like one, you can go to the other

2. RC8 is not sending out messages to 453. So if you are getting billed, try out this modded update.

3. Voice dialing, myfaves, amazon mp3 store, chat messages via SMS are not present in UK version. So, if you never used these features, this update is for you.

4. There might be some issues with MMS. But ofcourse you can always switch back to RC30 if its too problematic.

ADP1 stock has everything G1 has (apk-wise) minus Amazon MP3 and Voice Dialing. There are also some other subtle differences like how ADP1 apks don't have premade optimized dex files. (whatever this means...)

the ADP1 has much more space available in /system than RC30 does. RC30 has around 3.5MB free space, ADP1 has around 15mb.

when you jump between RC30, RC8 and ADP1, it is a good idea to do a data reset.

4. number format (phone numbers) are european in rc8, US-style in rc30

5. You can switch between modded RC30 and RC8 without any hassles. A data reset / factory reset is recommended. You will loose all data then (exept contacts, calendar and gmail, if synchronized before)

6. Voice dialing, myfaves, amazon mp3 store, chat messages via SMS are not present in UK version. Voice dialing and amazon mp3-store are included in the actual modded rc8 UK-version (JesusFreke ver. 1.3.1)

7. There might be some issues with MMS in rc8.

can you get the app for voice dialing anywhere to add it into the ADP1 image? xda?

The strange thing is that in my modded rc8 (ver. 1.3.1) from Jesusfreke, voice dialing is included, allthough I read that it was not.

I don't know as I am on rc8 UK version now and not on ADP1. Normal rc8 UK version is said to lack voice dialing, my modded version has voice dialing, so maybe it's (or is not) the same with ADP1.

I read that you will have to speak with an american accent for voice dialing. "proper" english is not recognized.

The JesusFreke versions for ADP1 have voice dialing and amazon mp3 preinstalled. I do not know if the RC8 JF version does or not. Hope this helps!

i already tried to read the thread n the post. but still i a lil bit confused so sorry for my noobish question.

i have g1 , i bought it from china. but right now im in indonesia
i the gphone theres a google account from the store that unlocked the phone for me.
after i searched the information, alot of ppls said that i can just factory reset it.
but in the factory reset tutorial i see the gphone will asked u whether u have a google acc or not.
im a lil bit scared to try it, coz i dont know what kind of google acc data that i should provide for the gphone. is it from t mobile ? just like when u want to unlock the phone ? or its just a simple google account like i can create it in the google site ?

after that still have some problem
i want to root so i can use my sd for app,
before that i have to downgrade to rc 7
bcoz my firmware is version 1.0 and kila-uk1.0 tc5-rc8116470

so guess i need to downgrade it 1st to rc 7,

next question can i switch my firmware from uk to us ? bcoz uk dont have yahoo im n else. n i need that feature.
and if i can . how can i do that after downgrading. the downgrading tutorial i already bookmark it in the 1st page . so after i make sure i can change it to us i will do that asap.

btw whats the best firmware that i have to choose neway ?
