    rooting a mytouch 3g 1.2

i need to know if there is any other way other than the goldcard method to root the mytouch (magic, sapphire... whatever) 3g 1.2
everything i have found on it involves creating a goldcard and tells me i need a windows machine for part of the process. well being that my only computer now is a laptop running ubuntu, i don't have any real access to a windows machine for any real length of time. i also don't have a card reader. so, just curious if there are any other methods, or if it can be done without a windows machine and a card reader. for instance, is there a program that can be used with linux and is it possible to just access the sd in mass storage mode.

just to help any others trying this with ubuntu
i was given a link for creating a goldcard with ubuntu. it looks very simplified and does not require a card reader. i will be trying it out in a few days. i will let you all know how it works for me. here is the link if anyone else wants to give it a shot also:
