Hi mcmarkos, welcome to this "group".. I'm not a developer but would like to join that group; what's the name of that group in FB?.
Just to update my case.. I've got the Intellisync plan in PORTA, so I'm running my G1 on EDGE only; as I said before, 3G network is not compatible with T-mobile G1 (unless anyone has 3G.. please tell me), and my WiFi is not functioning. Right now, I have Build number DRC83 and Firmware 1.6
Regards,

This is the link that I found:
http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gi...2251678&ref=ts
yep, you are right Porta 3g is not compatible with the G1
Well, I already rooted my phone and it's ok, Cyanogen is cool
and the app aldiko and i Music are the best
what happened with your wifi? if you did a system wipe, it should work...
Well, actually I'm a developer that right know is working building social apps in facebook, but this year I'm thinking that I'm going to develop for the Android platform...
Cheers, Markos

Hey, I'm from Guayaquil. I installed the latest cyanogenMod (rooted+unlocked G1)
Somehow, my cellphone works for calls and Wifi, but if I use a chip with a dataplan, I've got no internet access. Any help would be appreciated.
EDIT: Tried the APN settings for Porta found earlier on the thread, and tried with another chip. I'm getting a 2G icon with arrows instead of EDGE as mentioned earlier, and I do have internet access. I would like to try changing the settings to those on an iPhone APNs (does anyone know if they're the same as the one I'm using?).

Hi KuroiZero, welcome to this "group".
It' really strange what's happening to you. Instead, my G1 works with dataplan, but no WiFi at all. I don't think an iPhone chip will help. I'm also from Guayaquil, and I remember that when travelling to Quito, I saw that 2G icon instead of the EDGE that I normally have at Guayaquil. I'm also have the "Use only 2G networks" checked.
Would you mind to show me how did you rooted your G1??. If you can send to me the link with the instructions you follow, I''ll thankful.
Regards,

I tried my G1 with another chip from Porta (my mom's). She's got a Blackberry with data. I was able to open maps and browse using that phone. The 2G icon appeared until yesterday, when I nandroid restored (because Google maps dissapeared from my phone) and installed cyanogen 4.2.9.1 afterwards.
I rooted my phone with the first method posted (using ADB), not the "1 click method" that came afterwards, although I don't think it makes a difference.
Strangely enough, I was getting 2G even when I had "Use only 2G networks" unchecked.
My chip has no data plan, so right now I'm back to EDGE.

data plan for the g1
Hi everyone,
In porta how much does it cost to have a data plan unlimited? $30 for 15 days? and In movistar, $20 for 30 days?
Because I have been trying to have a data plan in porta but it has been so difficult because first I wanted a post-paid plan and I couldn't because they say that for porta's politicies they can't give that service for phones that they don't offer!!! and now I'm trying to have a data plan in prepaid but I think that it's very expensive $30 for 15 days!
my question is am i right? $30 cost the service?

I have a dataplan in PORTA, and I pay $20 for it. But, my cellular plan is post-paid.
To be able to activate the data plan, I have to do something tricky: I got the list of the phones that PORTA recognizes to accept a data plan, and looked for a friend who has one of them, because PORTA has to register an "allowed" phone linked to this data plan. So, a friend of mine borrowed me his phone (an old Nokia registered in Movistar, but unlocked) and I took it to PORTA to activate the data plan linked to that phone. I had to convince the desk guy to do it because he said that the plan would be very slow with this phone. Anyway, when the plan was activated, I took out my SIM card and give back the phone to my friend. Now, my SIM card has the data plan and my G1 is able to "navigate"..

Traveling in a few days to GYE
So let me get this straight...
-No 3G in ecuador for the G1
-I have to manually input the APN settings
Also, I'm only staying for a couple of weeks but I'm going to need a data plan. What network do you guys recommend? Porta or Movistar.
Thanks Guys.
BTW, I'm going to Montaņita!!!!!!!

Hey Dorima27,
Cool Montanita is awesome!!!! Porta and Movistar I think that they are the same in the service, there aren't so many differences... maybe Porta has more coverage...
Well, I have my G1 with Porta mmm sincerely I think that is expensive, in Porta you have two options for activate:
1) With a prepaid plan in that case you can hire a data plan for 1 day ($3), 7 days ($15), and 15 days ($30)
2) With a postpaid plan in that case you need first a plan ($20 for least) and the cost of the data plan ($20), total=$40 for a month
If you decide for Porta I would recommend you prepaid because you are gonna stay here a couple of weeks you are only going to spend 30 bucks for 15 days...
with movistar I don't know, for someone I heard that is cheaper that the data plan cost $20 in prepaid but I'm not sure!!

3) Movistar Pre-Paid plan: You wait for a 3x1 day and add 25$ to your account wich becomes 75, then you get the $20 (+ IVA) internet service and you will still have like 52$ to talk all month with your movistar friends, but probably your porta friends wont call you anymore. So 25$ a month.

all you have to do is unlock the phone.
1. call your provider, talk to them.
2. pay for an unlock code somewhere.
Search is your friend.
How to Unlock G1 Phone For Free | Activate T-Mobile G1 Phone
But judging by the bands that movistar uses. The phone will not work that well down there.
