storm3 fact or fiction
The Storm2 refresh was in fact real, so real, that the final hardware was said to be within weeks of going out to carriers. Around the September time frame, it seems like RIM had some late night coffee meetings to discuss the reality of the Storm series and if it was in the company’s best interest to use resources in developing a model that was already well outdated thanks to the latest and greatest from Google’s Android and Apples iPhone platforms.
They were quick to realize they needed to scrap this project all together, and focus on a big re-branding of the series. Now comes the juicy part. OS7 when on the drawing board was still a stepping stone to a QNX based OS for handheld devices from RIM. Think of the PlayBook as a non-handheld if you will. Thanks to scraping the Storm2 refresh, it looks as though OS7 could in fact be the first QNX based OS for RIM’s next device in the Storm series, the Storm3.
What our informant told us is that the Storm3 will in fact lose the surepress feature, as early early hardware uses a capacitive screen. The hardware “should” be on par with the offerings you see today, such as a minimum 1Ghz processor, 1GB of RAM, and at least 8GB of ROM space. Again though these are probable specs, and can and possibly will change over the development process, it looks like RIM has finally realized it needs to step it up to compete in this market. Last but not least, even though we trust our informant greatly thanks to some of the past information we have received always take anything with a grain of salt until it is officially announced, no matter where you hear it from. Lets hope this all turns out to be true for RIM’s sake.proud to be a member of m3
