attempting to activate G1 on ATT

I am attempting to activate my G1 on att, but after I put in my google information it tells me "you dont have a network connection" " This could be a temporary problem or your SIM card may not be provisioned for Data services"



i did a search before posting, didnt find what I needed..

G1 cannot use At&t 3g, can only use Edge. If you cannot get edge where your at your gonna have to find a place where you can, If you have the option to skip activation, then do it, and setup a wifi connection.

how do i go about skipping the activation.. i cant even tell the diference btwn 3g and edge on this thing...

Im assuming your phone is stock and not rooted.

Most likely you'll need to setup APN settings. At the activation screen press menu, APN settings. and fill in the proper settings.

after you do this you should notice a "E" by your signal strength, meaning your on the Edge network. If you do not have some type of data plan your gonna want to, after you activate(which you'll need a Gmail acct for), go back into the settings and edit the "Username: wap@cingulargprs.com" I just add a .none to the and of it, and it will disable any data usage. again last part is only if you do not have data on your accnt, as G1 will use alot of data if left on.

looks like i got everything working, only thing is i cant browse the internet or use the andriod market... is it cause i cant access 3g?

i got an att data plan so i CAN use the data

Most likely thats the issue. Edge sucks for data, tis very slow. grab a wifi connection for those times.

No, you should be able to access the market and also use the browser for it. Check what it says with the market app, if any error occurs try Wifi and see if it is true which should be unlikely.

You can call T-mobile if your in service with them already, if not you have to pay to unlock it

what if my phone is rooted and the edge is on and i still cant use the browser or market?

Some locations dont support market, but browser should work. but most likely its an EDGE issue too slow. grab a wifi connection, if you can connect, then thats your issue.

do you get an error, or a force close? grab a logcat for either

I have a unlocked g1 and can't get the wifi to stay on it's on 1.6

If I remember correctly it shuts off at a given time to conserve battery when the screen is shut off, I believe there is an app that consistently stays on, but you will drain your battery two times quicker.
