Find a ROM thats good and stable, and set it up. Froyo is far from a finished ROM, Its getting updated quite often. Most run great, some of the nightly's have their issues. now that you have root, your free to do whatever you like.
Just curious if your on MT3G 1.2? with the headphone jack
Congrats and welcome to android side of things!

Nope... the original 3G. I went back to a "Fast and Dirty" 1.6. Man, its super fast.

Since I heard the Magic HTC, we have been waiting on the edges of our seats to land at T-Mobile. After all, the Magic would be our second Android phone for review and we were eager to see if Google and HTC could improve their initial, T-Mobile G1.

CM5 runs good on the MT3G. I tried CM6 first cause I was really wanting Froyo, but it was just to slow on the phone. Eclair runs nice and smooth.

I've been running BiffMod 1.9 Which is a variant of CM6 and it's super smooth... LOVE this ROM.

from my experiences you can't go wrong with anything cyanogen.

I haven't had any issues with cm 6 but I have been running nightlies for a while now and a 710 overclock kernel. I didn't find biffmod to be much different than cm6 stable personally. It is after all based on cm6 anyway.

i never use google maps. usually i delete it even. as far as the browser, maybe it is and i just haven't noticed. i had an iphone before moving to android so maybe i just got used to slow browsers on cell phones. lol. either way, the way i look at things, it's a phone not a super computer. and on top of that it is a base model htc phone. not like it's a nexus one or anything. i don't expect ridiculous speed. nor do i need it really. i like the features cyanogen carries. so for me, they are my favorite roms. that's all. just a difference of opinion.

a good way to speed up your cyanogen rom is to delete the bloatware you don't use. the list of everything installed by cyanogenmod roms and what is safe to delete can be found HERE
EDIT: the safe to delete list also applies to other roms too. there may just be things not listed and you will not have some of the things that are listed. but anything you have that is listed as safe to delete, is safe to delete from any rom.

yea i've got that process pretty much memorized. I rip out the Camera.apk, Email.apk, Development.apk, SpareParts.apk.... no need using them on a non ROM builder's phone.
good information for those who do not know none the less.
And you need to make sure what you type is case sensitive in the "rm -f" line.
meaning it's
adb remount
adb shell
# rm -f /system/app/Development.apk
# pm uninstall com.android.developmentCurrent = HTC Glacier | S=OFF ! ! ! | Android 2.2.1.
