    Wi-Fi connectivity problem

Hope it's the right place for asking help. Well, I have a brand new HTC Desire, everything is working fine, but having problems with the Wi-Fi connectivity. Every time I go into wireless network settings and turn on the Wi-Fi, I get a pop up box which says "Unable to scan for networks" and then switches off the Wi-Fi. I tried entering my home Wi-Fi manually, but had no success. I also have a Samsung phone and it picks up the home Wi-Fi without any problem. Does anyone know how to fix it?

    Thanks.

Is the phone rooted? running a custom ROM or anything.
That almost sounds like a Hardware issue.
