    I tried it and it ended up screwing with some things so I had to reload my nandroid backup..
    It added the unknown sources checkbox ok but it broke the package installer and all it would do is FC anytime it ran.

    I'm assuming that this does not work for the official 2.1 release and only works for 1.5?

    Yes, you need to get J_r0dd's new beta for non-market apps

    Note: This is only for the official Motorola 2.1 Update. If you're using j_r0dd's Preclair ROM, you already have this.

    Allow Non-Market Apps for Backflip users with the 2.1 Update: Enable Non-Market Apps 2.1

    Just replace the files on your phone with the ones in the zip file and set the permissions of the files as stated below. You may also manually change the files but for the settings.db files, you will need an SQLite editor.

    1. data/data/com.android.providers.settings/databases/settings.db
    - Manual Editing: Change install_non_market_apps from 0 to 1
    - Permissions:
    * com.android.providers.settings: rwxr-xr-x
    * databases: rwxrwxr-x
    * settings.db: rw-rw----

    2. data/data/com.motorola.android.providers.settings/databases/settings.db
    - Manual Editing: Change force_only_market_apps from 1 to 0
    - Permissions:
    * com.motorola.android.providers.settings: rwxr-xr-x
    * databases: rwxrwxr-x
    * settings.mkitso: rw-rw----

    Thanks. I had already decided to give j_r0dd's ROM a try. Getting tired of having to delete apps because I'm out of storage space. Gonna see if I can get a2sd going.

    @ Everyone:

    I was finally able to figure out how to allow non-market app installs. Yey!

    Just visit my post above. I've updated the links and provided instructions for manual editing...

    Yeah hope you made a nandroid before you did it otherwise reflash your rom and start over.
    j_r0dd's rom ALREADY HAS THIS enabled in it this is ONLY for those of us using the AT&T/Moto 2.1 rom.

    I swear nobody pays attention anymore.

    Anyways just finished rebooting after replacing the files, and installed GBCoid from my SD Card with no trouble! The Unknown Sources checkbox is back in Menu>Settings>Applications again YAAAAAAAAY!

    One thing to make note of when installing Beach_Heads files.. Make sure you write down the original permissions of the files youre replacing and reapply them when youve copied em over.. The files in the zip have different permissions than the databases and settings files on your phone, make sure you set the new files to the same ones as the old (or you conveniently wont even have read access to any of em hehe)..

    I paid attention...I'm running the official 2.1 rooted with J_Rodd's recovery and I'm stuck in a boot loop.

    "Fix Permissions" in recovery fixed this.

    And it's working. Sweet

    After flashing it I never had permissions to install non market apps...

    Anyways I did make the nandroid. still tried copying everything over, boot loops.. Disabled Apps2SD seemed to fix things for me. Reenabled after and voila...

    THANKS

    You mustve made changes after flashing to do that. Even something as simple as recovering settings from a Titanium Backup will change this.

    Mono is right, it IS enabled on jr0dd's ROM by default...ive flashed, reflashed and reinstalled tons of times since its release.

    This process is NOT necessary for those of us using jr0dds 1.0.2.

    Sent from my Backflip running j_r0dd's v1.0.2!
