[MOD] Better BusyBox + BASH + Nano

Here's an update.zip containing a busybox with 302 (!!!) apps, nano, and a full-featured Bourne Again shell. It replaces the stock /system/bin/sh with a symlink to bash. It also preserves a backup copy, called sh.bak.

Thanks goes to dsixda's Kitchen, which is where I got these from.

Instructions: **requires j_r0dd's recovery**

1. Copy bbnb-update-signed.zip to SD card.
2. Reboot into recovery.
3. Flash from SD card.

NOTE: Do not be alarmed when it says "Deleting files.." for a long time. It is NOT deleting your OS or doing anything malicious. It is simply deleting all of the symlinks to the stock busybox so it can re-link them to the new one. There are a LOT of them, so it will sit there for a while and show a lot of "Deleting files.." - again, don't be alarmed!

This does not appear to break anything, at least not on my phone. Please let me know if it breaks anything on yours!

Ok, i cant run any bash commands... this package should be marked NOGO till it functions. What are the steps to replace the package? I cant get into the recovery image on my sd via the "reboot recovery" command.

To reboot into recovery manually, hold the Camera button when turning on the phone, until it tells you to release it.. Then, hit VOL-DOWN within 10 secs to enter recovery (it will erroneously say you hit VOL-UP, just ignore that) and it will go into recovery mode.

To restore all of your stock toolbox apps, run adb shell (assuming you have the rooted/unsecured version installed) and paste this into the window:

(alternately, I believe the update.zip is fixed now, try redownloading (new link) it and install it if you can)

I had to run

rm /system/bin/ln
/system/bin/toolbox ln -s /system/bin/toolbox /system/bin/ln
to completely replace ln

BUT now stuff seems to work. When I run nano I get an error "Error opening terminal: unknown." Reboot is finally working, su apps are too. Thanks!

To get nano working, enter the following:

export TERM=linux
export TERMINFO=/etc/terminfo

and it should work! It's strange, I put that into /etc/bash.bashrc and (on my phone) it gets executed when I su, which is what it should be doing on your phone.. Are you in bash or in sh? I'm using ConnectBot, that may have something to do with it.

bash is just a better shell then the sh currently installed, busybox is a set of basic tools that are highly optimized for small code footprints. the default busybox version for mb300 is lame compared to the one mentioned above. and nano is a basic editor. If you want to learn more about your phone, I highly suggest setting up a Linux desktop (ubuntu is a great beginner choice, try wubi). once linux on the desktop becomes familiar to you then pick up embedded linux such as android. And really I encourage anyone of any skill level to try new things but then again if you have to ask what these things are good for then it is probably not a good idea to use them because busybox, for one, contains tools that can do serious irreparable damage to your phone if not familiar on proper usage. trust me a single syntax error can cause a bad day....

root explorer still works after flashing this... so either buy root explorer or restore your phone to the way it was before all this. those are the only two workarounds ive found.

So I got a workaround working.
Restored phone then moved bash and nano to /system/bin and chmod 755 both of them then moved bashrc file and terminfo folder to /system/etc then moved busybox to /system/xbin and chmod 755 it then ./busybox --install ./ then added export PATH=/sbin:/system/xbin:/system/bin to bashrc. So now only uses new busybox after I switch to bash.

You're absolutely right. That's why I clearly stated my sources, so if there is some evilware in there, it can be traced back. This is also why I included the installer script in the OP as well, so anyone interested can see what they're downloading before they download it.

Unfortunately, on these phones, the easiest way for community members to disseminate stuff is through precompiled binaries, since getting the Android toolchain working is such a hit-or-miss process, depending on your workstation setup.

I will always make my sources abundantly clear if I got something I'm sharing from somewhere else, and if it's something I wrote, I will always include the source code. ^_^
