you can. once adb shell is connected you have to type su ,then on the phone it will pop something up asking for permission, you give it permission and you have Root thru adb shell.....

now I'm running into the problem its saying not enough space to flash the recovery.

I've been trying to remove all the stuff I don't need from my phone (ringtones, bloatware, ect) but it keeps telling me its a read-only file system.
from adb shell how do I changed the filesystem so I can remove the bloatware.
I went to get root explorer but don't currently have the cash (yes I know its not alot but still, bills suck!) to purchase it.

    any suggestions?

Thanks for the su trick. It worked.

For your issue, try to do it through a terminal on the phone, and make sure you delete recovery.img in the /system folder

thing is I'm not finding anything called recovery inside the /system folder.....
    only thing I'm finding is:

    Directories:
    app
    bin
    etc
    fonts
    framework
    lib
    lost+found
    media
    usr
    xbin

    Files:
    build.prop
    default.prop

edit: recovery flashing is still failing, and I've removed a TON of stuff (ringtones, sounds)
root explorer is saying that for /system I have:
    127.54MB used, 33.71MB free
can't think of anything else I can remove

the recovery is on it's own partition removing all that other stuff is not going to make a bit of difference. the only thing you should have removed was the recovery.img from /system because the init is set to write the recovery on every boot if it is found in system. if your flashing is failing, just name it recovery.img and copy it over to /system. when you reboot it will automatically be written for you

I feel completely stupid and blind (going more with the combination of both) then cause I can't find the recovery anywhere on my phone to get rid of it.....

I was looking under /system and what I posted previously was the only things I seen in it.

going to just rename it and move it to /system and see if it works

edit 2 moved it over, renamed
booted holding down the camera key, hit volume down for recovery, I briefly seen some hex coding, then it stopped at a blue screen that said:

    USB FastBoot: V0.5
    Machine ID: Zeppelin 0a00
    Build Date: Apr 8 2010, 07:03:28

    Serial Number:

** Security on, fastboot disabled **

and it was stuck, had to take battery out to do anything with it

I did on power up holding down camera, it tells me to release the camera key. then shows a menu that says volume up for bootloader, volume down for recovery. I hit volume down, see the hex stuff, then it dumps into the blue screen I described

if I hold the menu button while its powering on, it loads the Bootloader USB init

    edit:
redid all steps (both trying to flash and renaming and moving it over, then rebooting)
    still the same problem results....
    think I'm cursed

Just another way to install j_r0dd-mb501-v1.7.4.1 recovery. I have made SBF file. It contains j_r0dd's recovery only.
So download it, unzip and flash j_r0dd-mb501-v1.7.4.1.sbf using RSD Lite and you are done.

If you would like to root your phone after that, just put Root-1-5.zip file onto root of you sdcard,
boot phone into j_r0dd's recovery, select "Flash zip from SD" menu option, choose Root-1-5.zip and reboot.
