when I tried to flash the 1.8 version it tells me no more space left on device....what's that all about?
    thanks.

Update: I had to flash 1.7.6 back to it.
    1.8 won't flash for me.

it is bad blocks on internal memory, I can confirm that
and I can't find where the post is on another forum but I've talked to some people and it seems to be a common problem with atleast the Cliq Xt's (There was somewhere were people were tracking serial numbers or something to see if it was a bad batch that got made or something)

1.8.1 is now up with new key mappings, various other fixes, but most importantly a smaller kernel. this should help the people with bad blocks to flash

I used the 1.8.1, same error, "not writing bad block" and "no space left on device"

That sucks. you have bad internal storage. it seems like this quite common for the xt. Your might want to download rom manager from the market and try clockwork recovery instead
