You can always upgrade to any firmware as long as it is not in the C2 path. In your case if the 12P is a generic and the original firmware, you can.
Use RSDLite to flash your phone.

Can I follow these step to flash the new firmware on A1200. These step are taken from flashing the firmware for E6. Please let me know if these steps are wrong....
1) Download and install RSDlite v2.8+
2) FULLY charge battery to prevent turning your phone into a paperweight ( "brick", "bricking")
3) Download the firmware for your A1200 as preferred
4)On your phone, go to Setup > USB mode > MODEM > Save
5)Turn off your phone
6)Hold the Camera hotkey ( top right ) and then Power On (End Call button) together until a red screen turns on. it should say
" MBM FLASH MODE "
7)Run RSDLite
8)Install drivers if asked to do so
9)Plug the data cable from your computer to your A1200
10)Look for RSDlite to say " Connected " before proceeding ( may take a minute, if not, restart RSDlite )
11)At the top, click the " ... " button to browse for the firmware you downloaded and select it
12)click " start " and watch for any notifications that tells you to install drivers, install as they are presented to you.
13)It may ask you to manually restart the phone – if so, unplug the cable from PC, remove the battery for 5 seconds , put battery back in then turn phone back on. Set it back to USB MODE > MODEM, then plug it back into the computer.
14)If it says "passed" or "completed", unplug the phone, and restart it.
15)Completed flashing of your firmware
I tried only this step "I changed to MODEM mode and switched off and Hold the Camera hotkey ( top right ) and then Power On (End Call button) together until a red screen turns on. it should say " MBM FLASH MODE "" I was not able to get the RED screen, I got only the normal switch on screen. I think these steps are not correct.
Please give me the correct steps to flash new firmware....Last edited by egpurusotaman; 06-20-2007 at 03:10 AM. Reason: Automerged Doublepost

Those are the correct steps. Try take out the battery, holding down those keys, and replacing the battery while they're held down.

**You have to hold the VR key (under the camera button on the right side) the Joystick and the Red Power button for the red flash screen.
That should do it.

Hi Poetic,
I was able to pull up the red flash screen and unfortunatley the A1200 I got was hosed from the start. I am trying to revive it for a friend and it appears that there was a botched attempt at installing the iPhone skin. All the skin files were saved directly to the ROM on the phone and not the SD card. So...It boots up to the desktop after showing the Moto startup. None of the icons work and it shuts down properly. So I figured I could flash the FW again. However since I can't select Select>USB MODE>MODEM I don't know if this is whats stopping my RSD from seeing the phone. I have this on the phone currently: Boot.G_oo.01.89P_HAINAN I am trying to load 24xp30_c2_bint_emea_l4_debr_01_mis.rar on it to get it back to default. Am I on the right track here? Help!!
As always, Many thanks for your brilliance and time.
JenCiv

Dude all you got to do i download the MPKG installer. Then find the pkg/mpkg version of the software you need and get into the "open with" menu (Hold down on the file and a drop down menu opens). Then cholse MPKG from the software list and thats it. It'll automatically install.
New firmwares come with inbuilt MPKG installers.
Have fun

I donīt know which one is "the best" firmware, but i can recommend you these firmwares, compatible with almost all a1200:
Firmware A1200R Especial Edition - with widgets from Motorola
[a1200] Nueva Ezx Lotus SC v3.5 SDHC y alamacenamiento masivo, HIBRIDA
(a1200) EZX Reload V III ( a1200 - Hibrida - 16x )
(A1200) Monster Pack CoYaG IV Super Lite -HIBRIDA-
