So the wife's XT is getting a notice to update her firmware to 1.32.20. I've rooted her phone and took off some bloatware so I know I can't just apply the update.

Question: Do I need to wipe the phone before reflashing or does the act of flashing actually wipe the entire phone already - I know it's a n00bish question but I want to be sure.

*** I have a nand backup of her image so I'm not worried about wiping it completely.

The fastest way is to simply use the 1.31.44 ROM from here download it then onto your computer rename it to update.zip then place it on your sdcard. make sure you restore the original recovery.img then boot into moto's recovery and select install zip from sdcard. Now she can install the new 1.32.20 and all that needs done then is to re-root the device.

Thanks! I pretty much got that part so I'm assuming then by flashing the stock firmware this wipes all her data (i.e. installed apps and what not) correct?

Yep. You can use Titanium before flashing. BTW, you donīt have to go back to 1.31.44 stock... 1.32.20 is already here, see the first post of this thread.

You have to flash the original recovery back onto the device, simply putting it on your sdcard won't do.

    Thanks!!!!!!!!!!!!

Little happy story because of the "zeppelin_viper_0_0_27_P3_supermonster-customer" ( chinese firmware )

I bought a stock T-mobile cliq xt off ebay and didn't know I can't use the phone unless I sign into Motoblur!!!!! I am definitely not interested in using DATA or wifi all the time, not only it RUN DOWN the battery, but also COST me great deal if I don't subscribe to the plan.
    Yes, I am cheap

Anyhow, after flash the custom chinese firmware, I chose "Register later" to Motoblue and start to using the phone and surf web ONLY when I want to. tks again guys~~~~~~~

***** Just curious, does any non-chinese firmware also able to bypass signing into Motoblur?
