Possible Rooting Solution for the Cliq XT/Quench

Making new dedicated post for this root method

I want to preface by first stating that I have not yet had the opportunity to test this root method myself. It does, however, seem as if there are many users who are finding success with it. That being said...

We can thank Paulogeneses at www.portalandroid.com for the following guide. (And we can thank Google Translate for giving me the ability to translate the guide roughly from Portuguese to English so we can have access to it)

The original post can be found here:
Portal Android - Comunidade de Desenvolvedores da Plataforma Android - Ver T

And here's the guide (Please excuse grammatical errors. A few words are incorrect due to the translation. I will modify it as necessary to make it more legible):

Much of the information that everybody's going on here is incomplete and confusing. I read some articles here and there and I'll try to explain what I did.

    REQUIRED FILES
    1) Motorola Drivers for Windows (NOTE: If you use Linux, the drivers are not required. Long live Linux!)
    * 32 bits: http://www.motorola.com/staticfiles/..._bit_4.6.0.zip
    * 64 bits: http://www.motorola.com/staticfiles/..._bit_4.6.0.zip
    2) Set the Android SDK for Windows: http://dl.google.com/android/android...06-windows.zip
    3) The program Instant Root: http://www.taranfx.com/download/instant-root.zip

    Quote:
    [UPDATED] IMPORTANT NOTES!
Unfortunately it is not at all firmwares that this method works! Look carefully at the message that InstantRoot displays in the notification window of the cell.
    * If you see something like "Instant root is not necessary" (in English, obviously), then fine, the method probably will work for you. Consider redo the procedure if something goes wrong.
    * If the message "Instant root failed", then, friend, unfortunately your device already has the fix that prevents the action of the instant root. The experiences of staff so far, has not worked in this case. But no harm in trying!

    STEPS
This step explains how to remove and install iGO MOTONAV. If their interest is only the root access, only to follow the step 9 and skip the following. Below you will find the explanation how to get the root.

    1) First of all, install InstantRoot and note the message, as described above.
    2) Set your phone to the USB debug mode (Settings => Applications => Development => Select "USB Debug")

    Quote:
NOTE: When you connect the phone, do not enable access to the memory card by the computer, or do not press the button "Output USB" on your phone (this window appears when you connect the cable).

    3) Unpack USB_Drivers_32_bit_4.6.0.zip (or USB_Drivers_64_bit_4.6.0.zip depending on the version) and run the file. Msi that comes with it. This will pre-install the phone drivers on your computer.
    4) Plug the phone into the computer, it will be recognized and installed the appropriate drivers.
    Quote:
NOTE: To see if this step was successful, you should see additional drivers being installed, such as "Mot Composite ADB Interface". If not, you may need to download the RSD-Lite (Motomodd) install and run. The RSD requires the installation of these drivers when you plug in the phone.

    5) Restart your computer.
    6) Unzip the android-sdk_r06-windows.zip for easy access to some directory, eg.: C: Android, then enter the DOS command prompt and navigate to the directory where you unzipped the file. If you use the way I suggested above, the files should be in "C: Android android-sdk-windows. Inside that directory is another called "tools", enter it (at the DOS prompt).
    7) Still at the DOS prompt, run the command "adb shell". The prompt should change to the sign "$". This means that you are already inside the phone, with access to regular user.
    8) Enter the command to enter the root access: su.
    9) After that, your DOS screen should be more or less like this:

    Quote:
    C: Android android-sdk-windows tools> adb shell
    $ Su
    su
    #

Then reassemble the system directory to be writable, as follows:

    Quote:
    # Mount-o remount, rw-t yaffs2 / dev/block/mtdblock6 / system

    10) Enter the following commands to remove from your cell MOTONAV (WARNING: it has no back! Do at own risk):

    Quote:
    # Rm / system / app / Motonav.apk
    # Mount-o ro, remount-t yaffs2 / dev/block/mtdblock6 / system
Note: You may make a mistake in that last command. This, however, should not bring major problems because it happened to me

Note: Later, you can enjoy and also delete the directory "MOTONAV, this application creates the root of your memory card.

    11) MOTONAV out of the way, you should be able to install iGo. However, in my case I could not, since received an error message. It was necessary to restore the original settings for successful installation. To do this, go to Settings => Memory card and SD => Restore original configuration.

    12) After rebooting the machine, install iGo normally!

STEPS TO ENABLE ACCESS PROGRAMS THAT NEED ROOT! (Ex.: Market Enabler OverclockWidget, Wifi-Tether, Apps2SD, Busybox, Metamorph, etc.)

Will need an additional program, the agora (Superuser?): http://koushikdutta.blurryfox.com/Su.../Superuser.zip. Download, unzip and copy all files to the memory card. Obvious suggestion: directory called agora (Superuser?)

    1) Go to Step 9 of the previous explanation, entering the "adb shell" and way of accessing the root with the command "su". Also reassemble the system directory as explained above. Your screen will be so after completing this step:

    Quote:
    C: Android android-sdk-windows tools> adb shell
    $ Su
    su
    # Mount-o remount, rw-t yaffs2 / dev/block/mtdblock6 / system

    2) Go to the directory where the files that you downloaded. Assuming you have done as I suggested in the example above, the command is as follows:

    Quote:
    # Cd / SDcard / agora / bin

    3) Now you will assign specific permissions to the file "su" the system and replace it with what's inside the bin directory of your SD card:

    Quote:
    # Chmod 4755 / system / bin / su
    Su # dd if = of = / system / bin / su

3.1) If the process described in Section 3 does not work, change the order of commands:

    Quote:
    Su # dd if = of = / system / bin / su
    # Chmod 4755 / system / bin / su

    4) Install Superuser.apk what's inside the bin directory of your SD card (/ SDcard / agora / bin / Superuser.apk).

    Quote:
OBS.: To install, use the ASTRO File Manager (or any other program you prefer to install packages) and navigate to the directory where you unzipped the "Superuser.apk. Click on it and have it installed.

    5) If everything has gone well so far, you already have root access to your Quench. To test, download a terminal program (eg: Better Terminal Emulator). Between it and type the command "su". Wait a moment that should appear on the screen the "agora (Superuser?) Whitelist", asking if you want to give root access to the program. You can choose to deny access, allow only this time, or always allow (all in English).

That's it, folks. I tried to make the most chewed possible. Do not know if it's root access that everyone expects, but at least it's a start

NOTE: The big secret is to make the phone to communicate ADB shell. For this, it must be recognized by computer, with the drivers already mentioned above properly installed. If you have any problems with this, a search on the net with that in mind, focusing on the ADB. This is the way, folks!

And my iGo is already helping me not to get lost here in the "Land of Drizzle" ... hehehe.

    Good luck

I will be updating as I can. I am going through the Portuguese thread and translating every post. When I find information that will be helpful in rooting, I will translate and post it here.

    Much luck!

E mais um grande obrigado aos membros da www.portalandroid.com

So close, yet so far away. The funny thing is a lot of people are freaking out about the lack of 2.1 update from Motorola. That to me is a means to an end. I want that released so that someone will root the XT.

    An update:

It seems that our friends to the South are attempting to take a rooted Cliq XT and "update" it to 2.1 by using a custom "Recovery" ROM. I'm trying to keep myself updated there...but the language barrier is a little bit difficult even with a translator.

This is the most progress I have seen for the XT for a while...so excuse my enthusiasm.

No that is not what they are doing. What they want is to install a custom recovery on one of the phones that has the root access. With this custom recovery they can use Nandroid to backup the image from their rooted ROM.

After they have the image from the rooted ROM they can see what are the differences between 2 different versions that they have. The rooted one is Blur_Version.0.12.196.MB501.TIM.en.BR and the one that doesn't get root access is Blur_Version.0.12.183.MB501.TIM.en.BR. Between those two ROMs the one with root access is the one released later 12.196 instead of the one before that 12.183.
Neither of these ROMs are the ones we have here(modmymobile).

Apparently one of the guys there is communicating with Handlerexploit to see if they can finally get the CliqXT rooted.

I don't speak portuguese but I do speak spanish and it helps a lot in getting to understand those parts that Google translator don't translate good.

Also some members there apparently have a problem with us getting info from their forum even when they have come to this forum for answers before(same usernames). Strange but True.

The "InstantRoot.apk" is using a kernel exploit which was avaiable up to 1.5 (fixed in 1.6+). It looks like Moto branched the 1.5 again and forgot to fix it in there.

Thanks Semseddin for the signature and avatar.

They didn't seem to have a problem at all with me being there and asking questions, nor did they have a problem with my attempts to relay their status here so long as I was clear that it was their work and not mine.

Well, they are laughing at the "gringos" for attempting to translate their portuguese forum to english using Google translator and more importantly asking others to NOT take the time to translate it for us even when someone volunteered to do it.

The only reason they post here is because the person who did the root instructions flashed our T-mobile ROM to his phone and is now equally frustrated as we are. He has the solution for rooting some phones but not for his own.

I really hope they can help us all to finally root our phones. Maybe the key to it will be their ROMs since it seems ours are a lot more harder to root.

Just Explaining somethings about this method.

I'm brazilian and understand some english to translate that to you.

The method depends on the firmware. I went through all steps, succeded on getting root on my Quench and discover somethings:

    1. METHOD TIPS: It consists in using ADB shell to correctly place su command in /system/bin.

When I installed InstantRoot, it said that I already have Root... Don't know if it was a Bug or I already have root indeed.

The fact is that executing $ su, gave me # root shell. But command su don't was in /system/bin/su, and apps that need root access look for this path. So copying su from Superuser package resolved this.

    2. FIRMWARE DEPENDENCY: In Brazil apparently there's 2 (183,196) versions of firmwares:

    • Blur_Version.0.12.196.MB501.TIM.en.BR # WORKS
    • Blur_Version.0.12.183.MB501.TIM.en.BR # Dont Work

    • There's a Retail version that seem to work too (has the 196 version, without TIM apps) but no one has reported success yet.

    3. BACKING UP ORIGINAL ROM: Rom Manager dont work after getting root, in fact, it's bricks the phone. As I realized... There's an effort to get this image using other methods (and apps), and make it available.

    4. RECOVERING FROM BRICK: Flashing the T-mobile Rom 1.31.44, from this site, using blue screen usb bootloader (holding Menu button on boot, right before the phone vibrates), unbricked my phone, but, as you probably realized, do not contain su command and dont work to get root using this method.

I hope that this helps. I will try to keep update this thread too.

And Sorry if I commited some crime against your language.. I'm currently learning to write better, though the reading is easy for me.

Don't worry you are writing OK. Good to hear that you unbricked your phone but sad that you are now the same as we are.

What other methods are you trying to use to obtain the image?

We are trying to replace motorola's original recovery tool by Recovery M. Fox, Recovery 1.6, and 1.4.

Unfortunatelly these recoveries needs root access and the few people that have it, don't understands, yet, the proccess to change the original recovery tool.

Well... I don't remember anyone here going to our brazilian forum and translating anything to help us.
Unlike this, some members HERE was just doubting our friend who came here only trying to help you guys.

We don't have any problems with anyone who wants to come to our forum and get any informations. It's free and you all are welcome. If someone needs help, the only thing he needs to do is go there and ask. Sure he will be supported like any other else, same way I came here, looking for help when I had problem and got it solved.

I just think it's not fair when we have to do our things (like google translating) to get informations here and you all just can't take some time and do the same. And furthermore, we still have to prove to anyone here believe in us.

Now that's very fair, isn't it?

    Regards.

I am one of those using Google translate....

When you post something new (root on Cliq XT=never done before)on a forum you are going to be asked for proof if you are not a well known and respected forum member prior to posting. It is that way on all forums!

I agree, but some people should at least give it a try, don't you think? Like I said before, doubting wouldn't help.

Well.. I understand we all are in the same boat, since we are Quench/CliqXT owners, and have same needs, right?

Let's get this little thing rooted once and for all.
