    Help with app Cleanup..

Quick details on my setup. I'm using kb7sqis CliqXT Build 1.0 rom. My phone is a Motorola Cliq XT 501, it is unlocked, and is setup currently as a GoPhone on AT&T's network. I primarily use it for data and do less Texting/Talking.

So the goal here is to eliminate ALL apps/features that carelessly use data. If I could I would wipe all the apps out but us Android Modders know that isn't possible. Some apps people claim you cannot delete you can just receive a brief error at boot-up. An example app is ImProvider.apk. You can delete it, receive 2 popups saying that the Google Im service has crashed, and than you never see it again unless you do a reboot.

The reason I'm trying to save as much bandwidth I can is quite simple. I'm attempting to use AT&T's 1MB transfer package + WiFi to do SMS via Google Voice. I deleted alot of apps and currently use an average of 38.1Kb per hour with the phone idle. Not quite sure if their are more apps to delete that uses data or not but I do know some of those Kb's are TTL packets.

So if anyone has a link to a thread that lists deletable apps or can share their knowledge that would be great!

The entire device is a data hog, its a 'connected' device so nearly everything on it maintains some sort of data connection even if it is not in use (the news, happenings widgets connect even if you never set them up). The best advice is to use the battery saving modes.. these turn off data connections when the devices goes to sleep.

Search for DroidWall on the Market. It allows you to decide which Apps can access the Web via which MobileWeb or Wifi.

Or you could use APNDroid which will block WEB all together till you tell it to turn it on.

I was using the rom as stated in the first post but it was to glitchy/buggy for me. I like good solid installs. That said the phone is using the 1.31.44 Rom from the Superthread found on this site. Than I updated it to 1.32.20 through the "System Update" on the phone to make sure I had a nice up-to-date clean install. Rooted the phone and now have Superuser installed.

I've been using Root Explorer to delete all the garbage Apps that like you said use data carelessly. I'm referring to this page on which Apps to remove and which to keep. I posted here hoping someone would be able to point me in the direction of a thread that breaks down each App/System file one by one.

The end goal here is not to just use an App to block data but to actually wipe it from the phone. I have a ton of non-internet Apps installed such as games, music player, vid player, etc. The phone currently is setup to use 100pct data. Every file sms/mms related I deleted so now the phone opens Google Voice and auto-navigates to compose a text message filling the persons name + number from my Contacts list in the phone. When I make a call it using Fring and connects to Google Voice to mask the phone number. only down side is I have to have people call me and than I call them back since Fring is only outbound.

So yea this is alot of work but I find it fun to do. I think $0.01 a minute to talk Nationwide and $0.00 a text is pretty good considering it only took about 2hrs to edit a few xml settings in the phone. It is all done through settings and if you where to pick up my phone and use the texting + calling you wouldn't even notice it's not the real deal.

Long post but one last thing. I have it setup to auto-disable APN once it has obtained a WiFi IP address for 15 seconds. If its on APN mode I have it setup so Google Voice syncs every 30 minutes but if its on WiFi mode every 30 seconds.

I wish I could just find a company offering data-only and like 10Mb for $5. At the moment the only good data-only plan is from Straight-Talk offing 30Mb for $30 plus some minutes/texting bundled with it. But then you still have to hack their phone to enable DUN and the purpose here is to get all the bells and whistles a phone has for under $15.

thank you for referring to my site for removing apps from the cliqxt.

sorry, i have been lax on removing more apps from it. i will make it a point to go through each one and provide more details on the packages. i have been terribly busy at work, but i have some time freed up this week. i will be sure to update the apps list soon.

Hopefully you either performed a nand backup, or made backups of your apps before messing with them.

    1. If you made a nand backup then restore it. Then start removing one apk at a time testing the market for functionality between each one. If you remove one and it disables the market then re-install it.

    2. If you made apk backups then you can re-install them until you find the one that restores market functionality...

    3. If you didn't perform any backups then shame on you... You can reflash your ROM to start over, or extract the ROM .zip and disect the /system/app folder to pull out what apk's you need.
