Hmm this is probably not good
On a standard 1.4.8 unrooted I followed instructions and flashed the first update, and it did it's thing. Step two with adb resulted in this:

    D:\Downloads\Web>adb shell flash_image recovery /sdcard/recovery.img
    - exec '/system/bin/sh' failed: No such file or directory (2) -

    Ungood. Advice? :\

You probably didn't download/put the second download on your SD card.

Just to confirm, my phone came with 1.3.18 and rooted just fine.
Not sure but I think the MotoBlur server is down atm.
Could just be my crap signal in my office at work though.

I am getting a 'permission denied' error when trying to push update.zip to the sdcard:

    adb push update.zip /sdcard
failed to copy 'update.zip' to '/sdcard/update.zip': Permission denied

    Advice?

    Thanks, I figured that.

So I power off the phone and get into the recovery by pressing power + camera button, and select recovery by pressing down on the volume. However, the phone just sits at the screen with the exclamation mark in the triangle next to a phone. After 10 minutes I decided it wasn't doing anything so I was forced to pull the battery to get it to turn off.

What exactly are the steps involved (in detail, nothing left out)? Sorry, totally new to this. It would be nice to see a comprehensive tutorial for this method...

Once you see that "triangle with an exclamation point" press "ALT+L" to give you a menu with all of your options...

Might want to add in stock recovery, command to flash is Alt-S.
Also on Step three can do:
    adb shell reboot
    Easier than pulling the battery

No problem Ill help u out.. Its not dat hard Im new to the cliq, but been flashing Roms for my G1... Anyways

Once u have it on ur sdcard.. Go into recovery by holding down power & cam releast cam button when told to.. then hit the volume down.. when it gets to the exclamation mark triangle thingie lol hold Alt then S-key...(follow on screen directions). Let it run, then let it reboot.. then do the steps on the first page.. the adb recovery steps.. then once done with dat boot in recovery again, do a wipe.. then go to Flash zip, flash the last zip file.. Let me know if u got it

You need to install the SDK, then navigate to the folder that has it, probably:
    c:\Android\android-sdk-windows\tools

    Then try again.
