[HOW-TO]Root the Motorola Cliq[ANY BOOTLOADER]

EDIT: The rooting procedure described in this thread has been obsoleted by another NEWER and SAFER method. You should really consider using the new method: [ROOT] Universal Cliq and Dext rooting method (Safe: Won't break 3g).

WARNING - If you choose to use this method, beware that Dext users may lose 3G functionality doing this. There is a new, alternative method to root the CLIQ/DEXT that will not flash your radio. It will just add root access to the firmware you are already using. It can be found here.

WARNING: Dext users may lose 3g with this method. See the bottom of this post for an alternative rooting method that will allow you to keep 3G.


Requirements

-- You must have adb setup on your computer: Setting up and using adb
-- Download these three files and put them in the root of your sdcard.
---- File 1 : http://www.motorola.com/staticfiles/...ange.en.FR.zip (rename to "update.zip")
---- File 2 : http://modmymobile.com/forums/548-mo...8-24-10-a.html (extract and rename to "recovery.img")
---- File 3 : Any rom of your choice. Check out the Cliq/Dext ROMs section. Do not worry about renaming to update.zip as the custom recovery will allow you to flash any rom.


Instructions

- Step 1 : Boot into stock recovery (Camera+Power then Vol Down) (press Alt + L to see options) and then flash File 1 (update.zip).
- Step 2 : Load up adb when the computer recognizes it type :

adb shell flash_image recovery /sdcard/recovery.img

- Step 3: Pull the battery and then reinsert it and go into your new custom recovery.(Camera+Power)
- Step 4: Wipe and then flash the rom of your choice (File 3)

Handler there is 2 typo's i see. In file 3b you typed "of you are 1.4.8" instead of " if "
and in Step two i think you tried to type "adb" twice but spelled it wrong the second time.

Actually with this method we should be able to root all cliqs, no more shx

Is the XT just a cliq without the hardware keyboard or are there other hardware differences as well. For instance, would a Cliq/Dext rom work on the Cliq XT like a G1 rom would work on a My Touch 3G?

Jr33 was at 1.4.8 and he is now rooted.

Its cool, everyone is rooting their Cliqs right now lol. I am gonna do a ton of reading and learning and I will post what I find. You guys are awesome btw. Just got my first Moto, I have been at XDA for ever and its good to be here. I hope to contribute alot to this community.
