Hey guys.

Was wondering what is the exact definition of a custom recovery?

Is it possible to go from Rooting to installaing a ROM straight away or do you need to do a custom recovery?

I tried rooting my DEXT today.

I got up to step 8 as well. I managed to follow the rooting method that won't breakt the 3g and used botconnect to access the terminal of my phone.

It seemed successfully and displayed the #, but when i moved to step 9, and typed in su in the command prompt in windows it says "permission denied".

I thing i noticed was that in step 8, when it displays the forked xxxx child, it has 1738 sometimes and 2504 sometimes. I've tried rooting it again and again and it still says permission denied.

Also i downloaded Terminal Emulator as well as Connectbot and i noticed that when i used Terminal Emulator and it displayed #, it wouldn't displayed # in connectbot immediately after i entered the commands in.

Can someone help me.....

Well i managed to get it working.

Great guide to the original OP. However it took me 9 hours to get my phone updated to 2.1.

The main issue was gaining root access which took like 3 hours cause i couldn't find the superuser file attachment in step 8.

Anyway thanks to the original OP.

I flashed to Vanilla w/Eclair 1.2 for my DEXT.

I'm wondering does my phone have to remain rooted to allow for the tethering function to work?

I mean once you've installed a custom rom, can you unroot it? I know its been asked before and its a silly question, but i'm interested in finding out.

Rooting means that you get "superuser access" for things such as tethering and messing with the system files. Rooting a stock Dext/Cliq gives you that access. Installing a custom ROM does not necessarily mean that you have root access, although most of the custom ROMs do include root access. The point is that whether or not you have a custom ROM or stock ROM, you will always need root access to do things like tether.

I am having the same problem with my Mexican Telcel Motoblur Dext.

I used Terminal Emulator and got #, but when going to step 9 in adb shell I got permission denied when trying su.

I allowed it and from that point forward i was able to get the # in the Command Prompt. However i saying that, this step took me like 2 hours because i also repeated step 8 a few times and with terminal emulator and connectbot , before finally the allow/deny message came up on my phone.

Help tried step 8 quiet a few times. Received # then su then Allowed the superuser access on both terminal and connectbot. Checked and rechecked and still permission denied in step 9 su! Help!

i guess just need to do same as step 9
i created a new folder backups and backupss, because there is to files with the same name
cat /default.prop > /sdcard/backups/default.prop
cat /system/default.prop > /sdcard/backupss/default.prop
etc ...

but for step 11
search on other forum, and some came up whit.
flash_image recovery /sdcard/recovery.img
but it did not work for me, well..
in cmd, it just says
# flash_image recovery /sdcard/recovery.img
flash_image recovery /sdcard/recovery.img
#

as if it work, but I can't go into recovery
i see a hazard sign, whit a phone, and need to remove battery, to do anything.

2nd update, found root explorer on the net,
did the job, but, still can't go in recovery mod.
still working on it


3rd update
did the recovery whit ROM Manager from clockworkmod.
worked like a charmed
instaled Adlxmod 2.1.5-2 .

i've followed all the steps up to rooting the device and have it done.. im trying to do the backups now and save it to my sdcard but when i type su i get permission denied and i can see the files listed but if i try write them as well i get permission denied... do i need to change something somewhere?

Hmm well nevermind that.. i just un hooked and closed everything and hooked it all up and opened another command box and it worked again.. let me save all the mtd files now.. =7

I found a bug, for my dext anyway lol.
I found when i mix wireless and 3G, sometime when i turn off my wireless the 3G will not connect to the internet, so i wonder if that is a bug with the update ? : p.


Also i start to have a problem, : Android LOW IN SPACE
I heard that 2.2 you can install app2sd and install program on your memorycard.

Any plan to have a 2.2 update for the dext ?

That is the dns bug that nearly everyone had with all the moto eclair roms.

im trying to get back to cupcakes n unroot my dext
follow the instructions but failed in step "rm /system/xbin/su"
this message came up "rm failed for /system/xbin/su, Read-only file system"
my keyboard light is off, so i really need to unroot it to see whether its phisically damage or just a software damage
