It's official - Only the Cliq gets 2.1
On the day of the 9-year anniversary of 9/11, Motorola today officially announced that only the T-Mobile US Cliq will make the jump to 2.1.
Dexts from all other countries "Will remain on Android 1.5 for the best combined hardware and software experience".
One can only speculate whether or not Motorola deliberately choose to doom the future of the Dext on this specific date. However, it is certain that the reason given for not upgrading the Dext to 2.1 leaves many questions unanswered - one of which are, why users of the exact same hardware, but in a different country, are better off on an older Android OS.
So this is it, boys. We're officially on our own...

Need the Cliq official 2.1 ROM.
Once we have that, we can get people working on Froyo (pretty easy due to OS structure and similarity).
The little-bit harder thing is to get Google AOSP 2.2 Froyo, and build it with all the packages from the 2.1 ROM, for the Dext.
This "news" is pretty stupid considering the DEXT was Motorola's Flagship for several weeks/few months (before Milestone) in many countries ...AND Motorola had sold quite a lot more DEXT's than CLIQs. I had read this when I was searching for when Motorola would release the updated ROMs, but I cannot recall the websites.

It seems moto have a habit of making fake promises to ensure steady sales.... I will learn from this, no more dodgy american companies starting with M from now on, they only seem to care for their local market and that is it! shocking effort Motorola.... and shame on you for shafting dext owners.

Well that sucks for the Dext users for not having an official one, but at least we know we can always work around that.
Thats like my G1 Phone only having 1.6 but I turned it into the Eclair rom. Dont worry guys. ^,~

Don't worry, as soon as CLIQ has the official 2.1, I think the devs could work out a similar version for DEXT users.

Yes, but after experiencing the stock 1.5 and experiencing the leak, I would sa moto can't write a decent fw for sht... or is that google? The phone has dead-set lousy performance giving me a very bad introduction to android.

It's pretty lame, not sure how Motorola thinks they can make people feel better by saying it's better for them. Doesn't really matter to me though, my warranty is already voided. I dropped the phone ONCE and the camera button got stuck, so when I went to reboot it tried to go into the recovery, haha. I took it back but they knew I had flashed it with different software.
Doesn't really matter, I got it fixed for $10 and have 2.1 installed. I'm going to be careful about buying Motorola in the future. They will continue to support their high-end phones. Too bad the Cliq/Dext WAS the high-end until the Droid came out. Actually, here in Mexico the Dext still is high-end. We only have the Dext and the Xperia X10, and they cost the same ridiculous price to buy out-right.

You know whats funny, If this was Apple everyone would just go out and buy a new iPhone/iPodTouch. Just something that crossed my mind.
Try Google search. You'd be surprised how many answers are floating around on the internet.

Since we have phones that updates every 6 months everyone got excited about a phone that wont be obsolete. When I had bought my G1 phone I was very excited, everything was BETA. Even the market, I dont know if many people here had a G1 but every app was free at that time. Its exciting how this developed into a phenomenon and crushing that lil exclusive apple.

I don't think they false advertised anything, theyre clever lil nutters.
But I can tell you that making the DEXT Froyo is a very very easy thing in terms of software. Android is versatile but it is also quite simplistic.
We cannot do this due to not having enough test hardware and lack of the relative drivers.
So the real thing is that Motorola isn't bad, theyre extremely smart and lazy.
In laymans terms, if you "under-treat" your customer, they turn away to your competitors. If you "good-treat" your customers they are happy and eventually your customer figures rise. But if you "over-treat" your customers then they keep wanting that same level of service from you, even if this is not possible for you to deliver and inhibits your customer figures from rising.
They've given us a great phone with great specs, nothing bleeding edge, not too highly priced and only mediocre-software. Perhaps if we did get an update to Eclair when officially announced (for June this year), then the Milestone/Droid customers would be angry and would demand Froyo upon its AOSP release. Simple.
