Question Dext on Orange - Android upgrade

The following is a reply received from motorola 17/12:-

We would like to advise you that Dext will not be receiving an upgrade to Android 2.1.

We apologise to those unhappy with the decision - it was based on a variety of business and technical factors, including the best combination of hardware and software for the device.

The system update only updates the software of the phone. If that message is displayed, it means your software is up to date.

In short I had a Samsung on Android 2.2. Following problems with the handset Orange have replaced it with a Dext.
I have now lost Google GPS voice-directed 'cos Dext is on Android 1.5
I gather there IS a way to upgrade Android via here but much of what you talk about is gobbledegook to me, a newbie.

    My phone details are:-
    System version Blur_1.3.39MB200.Orange.en.GB
    Hardware version SJUG5731AA
    Firmware version 1.5
    Baseband version 76XXC-63805025-SDCBALUM
    Kernel version 2.6.27 w15524@ca25rhe92 #1
    Build no. R6380CP1_035.14

Any simple, plain English help on this please

One second, let me find the guide I used. I was also running a 1.5 dext and I had very little knowledge and now I'm running 2.1 with everything working. Word of warning: don't flash new radios and when you flash a new rom make sure there is no radio.img in it or 3g will go. The method in the guide I am about to find will not lose 3g if followed correctly. Good luck
Edit: http://modmymobile.com/forums/562-motorola-cliq-general/555120-questions-about-rooting-uk-orange-dext.html Read through this as it is very useful. The guide I followed is about halfway down the page in a post by kazade. He documented the whole rooting process in a blogspot post. Now it's time to decide which ROM you want Good Luck, be careful and you'll be fine.

    Hi

Many thanks. Followed your link to Kazade
    and...

I've got as far as this.....
    >6. When your Dext says "USB Drive" or "Charge only" then choose "Charge only"
    7. Download this
    8. Extract it to C:\Moto_MSM_Root<

but the file is 'invalid' and won't open following a Trojan detected by Kaspersky
    >25/12/2010 23:35:50 Infected Trojan program Exploit.Linux.Lotoor.g ModMyMobile Forums - Downloads - ROOT (Backflip, Cliq XT, Cliq, Dext) High<

    all seems a bit ?!

Oh god, how unfortunate. I managed to get my service provider to credit my account and let me get a Samsung Galaxy S for free because the 1.5 DEXT is such a POS (e.g. no geotagging, no Moto endorsed upgrade etc). The ram, cpu, camera, screen are all junk over 2 year old technology compared to the Samsung. Tell your service provider they don't know what they are doing and demand an SGS back (was it an SGS you had??). The DEXT has never really been a well supported phone, Moto only seem to care for its US customers (and even then not so much, the Eclair seemed more of a forced upgrade to me with the Cliq, forced by the pressure wave of angry users, but the phone is not really all that capable of running it well). Those two phones are not in the same league, the SGS is leaps and bounds better than the DEXT.

Unfortunately my provider are a bigger POS. Upgraded a few months ago to a Samsung Galaxy 3 - decent spec (android 2.1)and worked ok except it kept tuning itself off. 3 replacements later! (same problem) they replaced it with a Samsung Wave - this on a BADA OS. Bit like running a decent BMW with a Ford 1.2 engine! Reeeally s**t. They would replace the handset until I had defected it twice more - which I did, unfortunately not much choice in what they replaced it with - hence the Motorola.
