because sudo is not a binary present in the android OS. sudo stands for "super user do", it is intended for shell users to run a single command as root which minimizes the risk of messing something up. sudo has no purpose if you are already root.
You see, madness, as you know, is like gravity. All it takes is a little push.

Gosh, I very minimally use macs :3 I didnt think it was on android though.
Is it safe to flash clockwork recovery? Is it phone specific or just in general? As you can tell this is my first android :3

Oh, for everyone having problems getting to the # prompt after doing the rageagainstthecage application, I had to reboot my phone to get it to # after running it.
Run rageagainst the cage
adb kill-server
adb devices
power down backflip
power on backflip
cd back to /data/local/tmp or whatever and rerun rageagainstthecage
you should have #
thats generally how I did it, you might not even have to rerun rage after restarting.

As for recovery, try this one for Cliq (very similar phone):

If it fails, you can flash stock one via SBF.

Can you post up a quick guideline for recovering with sbf? This is my only ATT phone and I cant risk being phoneless for a period. uh I take it that I flash the cliq recovery with sbf too?
Oh, theres install instructions in that thread. Ill be fine.
I think it flashed, the command went though and was echoed back to me and now im at the # prompt
how do I test this?Last edited by Skyfallkavu; 08-26-2010 at 01:32 PM. Reason: Automerged Doublepost

Basically you open the stock sbf *with the same firmware you have*, and keep up only recovery partition in there. However you can install stock recovery the same way as the modded one - ie via flash_image; that might be easier.
Reboot into recovery by typing "reboot recovery" from a rooted shell.

Alright, I guess I have root on my Backfip now (I'm able to adb shell and type su, phone prompts to allow and brings me to #). Still can't install apk's right from my file explorer (ES File Explorer) though. Is there something I'm missing?

Dbagjones:
That has to be edited in the firmware. "Just root" isn't enough.

Im sorry about the crappy quality, its the absolute best I can get with a DSC-H5. Its pretty tough to take pictures of a white backlit screen

Ah, ok. So that brings me to my next question. Do we now have the ability to flash a custom ROM? Sorry I'm a such a noob with this... very little experience with Linux/Android in general.

"Just Root" should allow us to modify the preinstalled AT&T software package through, right?
Can someone consolidate these instructions and associated apk's into one location so that those of us that have been following this from a high level can replicate your success?
Thanks everyone for your hard work. I almost threw my backflip @ a wall today. Now I'm glad I didn't.

Vol U/D can be used to navigate, even though Menu/Home/Back is unlit home still works as the selection key, haptics also work.
