Just confirming on the steps to root my backflip

Hey, I'm net to android modding.. I've read the threads available about this, but i just want to confirm before i start rooting my phone.
AFAIU, this is what i should be doing.

    1) Follow this guide to change the "recovery" on my phone.(all i've to do is replace my "recovery.img" with this one, right? )

    2) Follow this guide to "root" my phone.

This is what i do not understand:
1)Some threads said, "take a backup" i get that i've to use nandroid to take a backup of my system, but there were threads which said take a backup after i change the "recovery.img" ? is that what i should be doing?
    2) I do not have any "personal" data, so is backup necessary? Can i just use the "2.1 update" that motorola provided as my backup?(I donot have applications which i'll be missing if something goes wrong"

I haven't had any need of the stock recovery img file. That's the file responsible for the boot menu you can power-picture key into when you turn on your phone.

It is suggest to retain this recovery img to revert back to to flash official att-moto updates from the recovery menu instead of custom updates from jrodds. I don't worry about this as I just wipe my whole fone and flash w rsdlite and gain the unwanted stock recovery back in the process.

After the last att update ill never run another official att rom again (unless my fones going back to factory repair)

Taking advantage of this space and since asked about this issue I have a backflip of AT&T but I'm outside the U.S., specifically in Honduras, I would be interested to know exactly the steps to install this ROM correct me if I'm wrong:

    1) Root backflip
    2) Install j_r0dd's recovery
    3) Take a Backup
    4) Install signed-IT_radio.zip
    5) Install [ROM] preclair v1.0.3 (based on Moto's official) [11.15.10]

If isn't ok please tell me how to do it ...

    Thank you very much.
