I'm new at this, and old at life. I'm too old to learn a new language, but not too old to follow clear and concise directions. Is there anyone out there who can post clear and concise directions on how to update my XT720 (which has a buggy version of Dexter's Froyo)? I saw an update that will restore my FM volume control and I'm sure there are others that will fix all the things Dexter didn't. But I can not follow the language you people speak here and I'm too old to learn it. I would, however, like to have a phone that works the way it is supposed to.
    Thanks

Your phone's warranty is then through CBW, since the s/w is not sanctioned by Moto.

Interesting to see what it looks like.

@Pzyduck Shouldn't this thread be moved to Milestone forum? Motoroi is for markets outside USA.

Apparently you have no problem with English. If by "language" you mean "terminology" then you have a learning curve, regardless. The upgrade which is the topic of this thread is the most painless method I've seen, but you would then be locked to Cincinnati Bell Wireless.

Post new questions in a new thread, don't "hijack" another.

Yes, my English is fine, and perhaps "terminology" is a good substitute for "language". And I definitely don't want to be locked to Cincinnati Bell since I'm with Wind. But I do have an issue with the learning curve. At age 64 my grasp of new languages, ie. terminology is severely curtailed. Surely instructions can be posted in a way a layman can understand.

The .sbf file for Milestone (Wind Italy, unbranded) Android 2.2.1 (Froyo) is here -

    http://sbf.droid-developers.org/umts...vice1FF.sbf.gz

The gnu-zipped (.gz) file will need to be unzipped with WinRar, WinZip or 7zip (I think they all work for .gz) to expand the .sbf file, which is then flashed to the phone with RSD Lite (Google for it).

Download the phone software drivers from Motorola's support site and install them on your pc.

Open RSD Lite. Power on the phone while holding the menu key. RSD should indicate the phone is connected. Click [...] button in RSD Lite and navigate to the .sbf file and select it. Click [Start] button. If it completes successfully you will have restored the phone to latest Wind Italy firmware. If unsuccessful, you probably now own a brick.

Any more questions, start a new thread in Milestone forum. And I don't buy your Old Guy excuse. (I'm 67.)

Thank you Saurus. Have you used this upgrade? Does it fix the FM volume control, the 3g mobile hot spot app, the camera delay, the gallery, and voice search?
We all have our strengths and weaknesses. I can speak to you in 3 different languages, you obviously speak technology much better than I. Will this upgrade speak to me in Italian or English?
    Thanks again.

I was about to answer you on other thread you already made, when i saw that you had posted this several times, just letting you know that is not good to do that, it's better to be a little patient, and since i had already writted a lot, i don't want to just erase it
    @Not.a.programmer
This is our XT720 Forum (click the link).

Inside there are 4 sections, you choose what you want, in your case, you can check 2 sections, General, and roms, because you want to update your ROM (in other words, you want to update your phone's software, to say it nicely), I'm not sure if you want to use a modded ROM, or you'd like to go back to stock (stock ROM is the one you got with the phone, when it was brand new), Stocks are slower, but they are little or no bug, while modded usually have more bugs, but are faster, or have some tweaks that are really useful, the ROM saurus gave you is stock, so i'm pretty confident it will have no issues with volume, 3G or voice search, but it won't be as fast as a good modded ROM.

Most FW have several languages installed, i believe it's gonna be italian when you install, but it'll ask you right on the first or second screen to choose you language, time zone and time, if language doesn't appear there, it'll appear on your settings menu.

I'm pretty sure that with a little time, you will catch up on technology with most people on any forum, and if you want, you could even get really savvy, so don't worry.

Tip: to get those icons, you only need to click them, and a code will appear, something like :some_emoticon:, you don't need to copy the URL (address of the icon).

I'm quickly starting to realize my mistakes and as I delve deeper into these forums I am indeed learning. I think I've made another mistake though. If I use Saurus's rom will I lock my phone to Cincinnati Bell? If so, big mistake since I am with Wind.
I would be happy to go back to the stock rom

Yup, if you use a carrier locked ROM, you'd be locked to that carrier, there are some ROM which aren't locked and are stock (I'm not really sure which, because i don't own a XT720), also modded ROM are always unlocked, i highly recommend you to use the ROM i just posted in the ROM section, it's CM7 2011, it's pretty stable; but if you already flashed Cincinnati Bell and you are able to use your phone with no issues, then that ROM is not locked, if you can't make phone calls or anything you're now locked to Cincinnati and you'd have to get yourself a unlock code, which are not free.

The Cincinnati Bell rom is in the original post, do not use that. The .sbf.gz I referred to in post #6 is from droid-developers database, and is specific to Wind Italy, as I indicated. If that is your carrier, then it should be safe for you to use. (Their website is here: MILEDROPEDIA, just for reference.)

Another -and much easier - possibility is recovery from 'nandroid' backup, if the SD card in the phone is still present, and the original backup was performed before the custom rom was flashed. You can find out by powering up in recovery and selecting 'restore from backup' in the menu. If the backup exists, you should be able to restore that way.

    Booting into recovery
    Affected systems: ---
Description: Booting into recovery is different based on the bootloader.
Solution: On bootloader and newer 90.78 hold "X" key and power up the phone. On older bootloaders hold "Camera" key and power up the phone. Then (both cases) when you see the triangle with explanation mark, press "Volume up"
