Droid Has Been Rooted!
The wonderful minds over at AllDroid.org have finally found an exploit that will allow for rooting your Motorola Droid. Here's the breakdown.
To get the update and THEN root, first install the 2.0.1 update, and then install the 2.0 rooted version. It will give you root on 2.0.1.Code:HOWTO Download the zip file (see mirrors in posts below) Rename to "update.zip" and copy to the sdcard Power off the DROID and power back on while holding the X key When you see a "/!" symbol, press both vol+ and camera Use the onscreen menu to install update.zip Once installed you will be able to run "su" from your adb shell.
**REMEMBER**
You must rename both files to update.zip to flash your phone. So do one at a time.
Rooted 2.0
2.0.1 Update
Confirmation that it's working on my phone.

You can do many things with a rooted droid, install busybox+dropbear for ssh on a local network, setup tethering, take screenshots more easily, access the root filesystem and modify it.... it's embeded linux, the possibilities are only limited by the hardware.
Hardware and software are like a parachute.... they work best when open.
