HTC MyTouch 4G Root
Root Options for the HTC MyTouch 4G:
1. Easy way - Visionary plus pro r14. Available in the Android Market. My aversion to the 'easy way' root is pretty much done away with the app, BUT its not the coveted Security off (S=OFF) root we all want, so:
2. S=Off, best option for Perm Root:
Visionary is only part of the process. You need a couple more files and a working knowledge of abd and using terminal on your Mytouch 4G:
files:
wpx.ko
hboot_dhd.nb0
Visionary
A Terminal app (I use SUFBS)
Commands:
push the above two files to /data/local using ADB
adb push wpx.ko /data/local
adb push hboot_dhd.nb0 /data/local
run visionary and get temp root
Terminal:
Open up the terminal app and type in “su” to gain root access
Once the “#” appears, type in “insmod /data/local/wpx.ko” and hit Enter. You should get a “function not implemented error,” which is what you want.
This next terminal command will turn your device into a nice paperweight if you mess it up. If you do mess it up, don’t blame me, this all on you!
dd if=/data/local/hboot_dhd.nb0 of=/dev/block/mmcblk0p18 and hit Enter.
Close the terminal app, now open up visionary again. Run temp root again. You might get the “device already rooted” notification, this does not matter, what you are doing is locking in root.
Go back and open up your terminal emulator once more time and request root by typing “su”
Once you get the #, type “sync” wait about three minutes and reboot.
You should have permanent root with the security off (S-off), to check : With the phone off, hold down volume down and power to open Hboot. The top line of the screen should have “S-off” at the end.
As always what you do with your device is YOUR responsibility, you F it up its your problem... just saying
Now get a custom recovery:
Download ROM manager from the Android Market and use it to flash the Custom Recovery of your choice (Clockwork works for me) or simple grab them both here ROM Manager and Clockwork Recovery ImageLast edited by bupahs; 02-12-2011 at 06:18 PM. Reason: added perm root option

Is this still the correct process for rooting? I'm a noob at rooting Androids so I just want to make sure I dont screw anything up while I try to do this. Here are the details of the MyTouch4G I am trying to root:
Version: 2.2.1
Kernel: 2.6.32.21
Build: 1.17.531.2
Software: 1.17.531.2
Will the described process work on this phone? Please let me know if you need any other details.

Well I got the update at the Tmobile store and am running Gingerbread 2.3.4 now. I know CM7 was 2.3.4 some time ago...lol. I would like to root just to remove crap apps. But since I'm not voiding my warranty, I found that I can use auto memory manager and autokill from the market setting the right settings, I keep my battery usage above 90% for most of the day. And I managed to get Japanese on the phone as well. So I'm set. No need to root. This phone has all I need it to do.

I am a noob at this stuff so forgive me if this is a stupid question, but is it possible to root a MT4G running 2.3.4? I tried rooting my 2.2.1 MT4G with VISONary+ and my phone crashed and wouldn't reboot... sadly the new one comes with 2.3.4 preloaded. Any help is appreciated.
Cheers,

First off here's what I have:
HTC Glacier running 2.2.1
Kernel 2.6.32.21-g899d047
Build # 1.17.531.2 CL277036
I have tried the above described method 10+ times and cannot get the coveted S=off. I'm not quite a newb, but no pro either. I rooted all my other phones no problem (myTouch 3G, LG Optimus T, and Motorola Cliq XT). All the steps seem to work, but the sync returns a # sign almost immediately. Is that normal? How long should it take? All I want it to load CM7. I had it on my old phone, it's on my wife's, and I love it. Any hints or suggestions? Thanks.
I have tried this using an emulator on the phone as well as adb shell.Last edited by dneagle; 01-17-2012 at 12:36 PM. Reason: forgot to include some info
