Yep call your provider. Tell them you are traveling outside the country and you want to just be able to buy a burner sim and they should be happy to. Its what I do to all of the phones I have.

Hi, Just get unlock code to unlock your Motorola Cliq 2. Using unlock code is best method to unlock your mobile. Either you can get code from your network carrier or through online service. If you wish to get code through online service means, i would suggest you to get it through Superunlockcodes.com at affordable price. Here just you have to provide your mobile's IMEI number, country/network details to get unique unlock code for your mobile.. Hope it helps you. Check it out.

Buy a code from a trusted source. It is cheap and frees you from carrier ignorance and hassle. That is what I did. Just my 2 pence. Do what feels right to you.

I bought an unlocked Cliq 2 from Ebay. Once it's unlocked, can it be locked again if I flash it back to factory firmware, or if I try some mod like CM7?

If you flash a locked firmware with RSD Lite you will lock your phone to that firmware's carrier. The firmware files posted by Skrilax_CZ in his "firmwares superthread" stickies should be safe, but best to verify before flashing one to your phone. Those .sbf files must be flashed with RSD, but use it only as a last resort if you have no alternative, (bricked phone). Also note they are usually not interchangeable or downgradeable.
To install CM7 or any other custom rom:
1. Root your phone and install Superuser APK (I use SuperOneClick, but idk if it works for Cliq2. There are other automated root methods too.)
2. Install a custom recovery such as ClockWorkMod (CWM) to allow backup and custom rom installs
3. Back up everything via the custom recovery so it can be restored easily
3. The above will allow flashing a custom rom via the recovery menu.
In the US, if it's a T-Mobile phone you'll lose the built-in free wifi calling feature. Also 3G won't work on AT&T, only GSM. (Different 3G basebands)

Because tmobile phones use AWS (1700Mhz) band for 3g, and most other carrier outside the country doesnt use AWS bands for 3g

My bad!
UMTS frequency bands - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia (It's a hard table to memorize. Most of Latin America operates at 850MHz, band V.)
If you are on VTR or Nextel, You're Good
T-Mobile phones are capable of operating only on bands I, VIII and IX, so Europeans have no problem with them.Last edited by Saurus; 03-02-2012 at 10:56 AM.
