[E8|U9|ZN5|EM30]How to install skins *Updated: May 10*
How to install skins
Hi and welcome, this guide as been made as an answer to our member's request and interest on how to install skins, we'll check every method possible, because if one fails you'll be able to use other
..::ROKR E8::..
The first thing you have to do is flash your phone, with which FW? any FW you want, as long as it's modded (you can post it and then ask here if is modded or not)
First Method
Put your phone on memory card mode, and then create a folder called skins, it should be made on your phone's memory (at least i prefer it there); once connected, you'll see two more drives, usually E: and F:, but the can be technically any letter (the last letter should be phone's memory).
Now search for a .system folder, if you can't find it, click on Tools (Herramientas) then folder options (Opciones de carpeta) view (Ver) and tick out this boxes: hide extension known file types, hide protected operating system files, show hidden files and folders, then click OK, and you should see the .system folder; if you don't see a folder like that try installing a Java (it should appeir once you flashed your phone).
Now create folder and name them: skin1, skin2, and keep like that 'til skin10 and inside each it should be all the files you have (.ini, .gif, .bmp, .ezx and the svg folder), please, always fill in order, skin1, then skin2 and like that in order.

Then once you have 1 or two or 10 skins inside your phone's memory, disconnect your phone, click on shortcuts then change theme and click on options create theme and then change sideways (click to the right) and scroll all the way down, til the see an option named skins: click on it, and choose your skin, once you choose it, click on save! and that's it, Once that's done you can change the wallpaper and plenty of things with the options there.

Second method
1. Download the package [.mgs or .rar]
2. Make a folder in your desktop, unrar the skin there [yes unrar it, even if it's rar or mgs]
-Let's say you have an skin named AppLe
-Name the folder AppLe
-Don't use space, and respect the Capitals
3. Make sure there's only one folder
-Folder on desktop= AppLe, now it's another folder inside it, named, hmm apple, copy the contents of the apple folder inside AppLe, and erase the apple folder
4. Check if there's a folder named svg [case sensitive], it should have files like main_view.svg , softkeys.svg , tabs.svg , grid.svg inside, shadow_24bit, if not create it, and move the files that look like those inside the folder svg
5. Create a folder inside /mmc/movand1/ [Phone's memory] and name it, skins [exactly like that!]
6. Simply copy the skin folder there [the folder named AppLe]
7. Install this app, EasyThemes, if it's not already installed.
8. Click on setup theme, then click again in Update theme files
9. You should have your themes right there!

The first thing you have to do is flash your phone, with which FW? any FW you want, as long as it's modded (you can post it and then ask here if is modded or not).
Now that we have Telnet/FTP we can access with any FTP client, and connect it, then go to the main menu then go to games then telnet and finally click on the Telnet app or if you are using LinuxMod connect your phone also in modem mode go to settings then tweeks then snapshot & USB-Lan, after a couple seconds you'll ear a sound that'll indicate Telnet is enable.
After that's done depending on which client are you'll have to change the way of doing it, if you use FireFTP do this and if you use FileZilla enter the following fields: host: 192.168.16.2 - username: root - password: root - port: 21 - then click on quick connect and if you use FireFTP click on create account, fill in the black parts with the info you have (previus info) and click on OK, then click on quick connect.

Now let's go to /mmc/mmca1, now there you'll see two folders .skins and other one named skins

the first one is for the skins on your Phone's memory; you'll find 4 folders, each of them is able to contain 1 skin, put them in order, first the 1, then 2, 'til 4,

you must put all the files here (*.ezx, *.ini, *.bmp, etc), drag and drop all the files from the skin you want inside each folder, you can also do exactly the same with the folder named .skins, with the only diference you have 6 folders here, which means more skins
.
Now let's create the skin; go to your themes settings, and click on options then create theme then go sideways to and all the way down to the field where it says skins, and there choose the skin you want, and click on save.
That's it.

..::ZINE ZN5::..
Get yourself a Telnet enabled FW or enable it with a mod, like PinkMod, once that's done, get a skin, and check the files inside.
First Method
Create a folder named skins inside (if it doesn't exist already) ezxlocal/download/mystuff/unknown/

, now inside skins create another folder, this one named whatever you want, decide depending on the name of your theme, now copy the .chm file inside the theme on this address /ezxlocal/download/appwrite/setup/theme.

And now, edit the lines on the .chm to match your actual folder
Now rename it depending on your skins name and upload it again to /ezxlocal/download/appwrite/setup/theme.Skin = /ezxlocal/download/mystuff/unknown/skin/Purple
ThemeName = Purple

Second Method
- Copy folder jmod in to folder mmc/mmca1/Themes/
- Copy file jmod.chm in to folder /ezxlocal/download/appwrite/setuptheme/
- Copy folder Other in to folder /ezxlocal/
- Copy file medld.conf in to folder /ezxlocal/medl/
Some skins might not have a file or other, if they don't then just skip that step, but be sure it doesn't cuz if it uses it, then your skin won't work correctly.
Now remember, we are not tryin' to have EVERY way of installing themes, but just the most useful and the simpliest ones.

How to create/Edit .chm files and other mods
There are two ways on how to get a .chm, file, make it completely by yourself or edit the parts that you need, we'll take the easier way, let's edit one to what we need.
First, you'll have to copy this text in your favorite text editor, in my case is Notepad++
Now let's explain each important lines,[THEME_CONFIG_TABLE]
CLIScreenSaver = none
CalendarAlarm = /usr/data_resource/sound/ringtones/Elba_rt_magenta.dcf
CallAlertLine1 = /usr/data_resource/sound/ringtones/ROKR.dcf
CallAlertLine2 = /usr/data_resource/sound/ringtones/ROKR.dcf
EmailAlert = /usr/data_resource/sound/ringtones/rt_notification_1.dcf
IMAlert = /usr/data_resource/sound/ringtones/Elba_rt_transmission.dcf
MsgAlert = /usr/data_resource/sound/ringtones/rt_notification_2.dcf
PowerOffScreen = /mmc/movinand1/skins/Legend/splash_powerdown_ani_full.gif
PowerOnScreen = /mmc/movinand1/skins/Legend/splash_powerup_ani_full.gif
PttAlert = /usr/data_resource/sound/ringtones/rt_notification_1.dcf
PttCall = /usr/data_resource/sound/ringtones/rt_notification_1.dcf
ScreenSaver = /usr/data_resource/picture/Elba_Decibel.dcf
Skin = /mmc/movinand1/skins/Legend
SlideTone = 1
ThemeName = Legend
VMAlert = /usr/data_resource/sound/ringtones/Elba_rt_moon_light.dcf
WallPaper = /mmc/movinand1/skins/Legend/Apple1.png
WallPaperLayout = Fit-to-Screen
[THEME_PROP_TABLE]
CopyRight = MO_FRTMN
CreatedTime = 12/3/2009
GridIcon =
ListIcon =
PackagePath =
ParentPath =
ThemeSize = 1334424
Skin =, here it's the address of the skins folder, if you want it on your microSD then the address will be /mmc/mmca1/skins/skinname, but if you want it on your phones memory it'll be /mmc/movinand1/skins/skinname you can put it whereever you want, as long as you make sure the space is enough!, but remember the folder has to have a name and the files like .ezx, .ini, etc must be inside the folder, no other folder there.
Pic? Here it is

ThemeName =, this is the name of the skin, anything you want, but it's better if you use the name of the folder where the skin is at!
Those two, are the most important lines, the other ones, are lines to make the skin better: CalendarAlarm= the alarm for the calendar; CallAlertLine1= the tone that sounds when someone calls and you are using line 1, the other one will be the tone you get when someone calls you and you use line 2 [CallAlertLine2].
They are all pretty much self explanatory so, don't worry, and just copy that one, and fill it however you need to

Let's use this handy application named Motorola Linux Theme Manager
Use and Upload
Like it's name says, it's made for all Linux Motorola, let's get started...
What do you need, first, the application, download it HERE [the version here is v0.1.1], and then unrar it, put it where ever you want, and click on the icon that looks like a star, then it'll probably show this message up

Don't worry, just click on accept, yes or aceptar, depending on what your computer language is.
Then you have the program [aplication] itself; Now connect your phone in Modem mode
and then click on Re-connect

then click on List skins

After you have done that, you'll be able to see all the skins on your right side, don't worry if the left side appeirs with nothing, as those are the stock skins

And after you've done that, if you wanna upload themes, click on Upload skin
And this little screen will show up

Search the theme/skin, that you want, and then click on aceptar, or accept, whichever you language is
; in my case the theme was on the desktop, so it was quite simple, if you have folders inside the theme folder, a little arrow wil appeir, it shows that you have other folder in that folder, don't worry, just be sure you click the folder where all the theme files are, in this case for example

That's the folder named gotwood_EM30nE8, which is also the name of the skin
After you chose the skin/theme, the program will ask you this

Click on Yes or Si, in this case
Then it'll ask you, where do you want to save your theme, you have two choices, i prefer /mmc/mmca1/ because this is the microSD, if anything wrong happens i'll just take it out and everything will be fine, plus i have more space there

If the theme you selected has no .chm file this message will be shown

It doesn't really matter that this thing show up, unless you want to install 30 themes, in which case, i believe you'll see an error has the program will create files until the tenth skin, so it's better to create the file, i showed how in the last post
Delete skins
If you want to delete skins, click on Delete skin

And make sure you are not using that theme on that moment, or your phone might end up freezed
It's quite understandable and there is no need to flash if you use this method, so go ahead, any questions, here we are

P2K Commander
Open P2K Commander, you'll see this screen, wait up a sec

Your phone will have to be in Modem mode, it doesn't matter if you are running stock or modded FW, you'll have it.
Make sure your settings under Options are this ones

Wait, until this appears on the box below

Once you've done that, connect, and wait, if a message telling you this is the first time... and so, appears, just click on Yes
Now, click on this box, and choose ezxlocal

After that, wait a bit as it has to load every file inside ezxlocal, and they are a lot; after that's done, put in the address bar this: P2k:/ezxlocal/download/mystuff/skins/.
You should now, have something like this

Once there, copy your skin folder inside ezxlocal, How?
Just select the skin you want, by clicking on it, then it on copy

Wait a bit, until the last file has been copied, and then you'll have to upload the .chm file, but you'll have to edit it.
What do you have to edit, well open your file with Notepad++ and find and replace this
With thisSkin = /usr/data_resource/skin/default1
Once you have edited the .chm file, copy it here P2k:/ezxlocal/download/appwrite/setuptheme/, use the same method as described before.Skin = /ezxlocal/download/mystuff/skins/skin1/Last edited by Av3LaR; 06-20-2009 at 04:03 PM.

any modded firmware like this Best Webs so let me know, wich firmware and BL version you have ?

@donatdodat
The links are below the methods on the post, each method has one link to our download section and especifically to their own section, what phone do you have, and once you download the skin you'll get a file named. something.rar [something can change is just a random name] you'll need to use WinRar or 7zip do open that kind of files and then once you opened it, you'll get a folder with usually the same name as the rar, THAT folder is the one we use on the method, you need to drop the folder itself, if there is a folder inside other folder you need to use the folder that is the last, if you have, SKIN and inside skin you have two more folder one named PWYNGUN [which contains all the ini and ezx and it's the skin itself] and the other named CHM you'll have to use the one named PWYNGUN
Hope you get it
@xesco
Well the .mgs method, i haven't posted it cuz i don't have the latest ilove3d FW, which is the one that support this method, and i can't take screenshots, but the method is just drop the file on your phone from the computer [something.mgs] and click it with the FileManager of your phone, simple, that'll install it automatically.

New skins not showing up in list ... driving me mad!
Hi.
I've just got a new E8, and flashed this bestwebs firmware successfully:
http://www.modmymoto.com/forums/showthread.php?t=395441
I then followed the instructions to install new themes, but when it comes to selecting the new skin while 'creating new theme', onyx is the only available option.
Someone else appears to have brought up the same issue: they were referred to 'theme manager', but I've had no luck with getting that to work either. With that, I gather I need to set up telnet on the phone, (it should be in the firmware, right?), but I can't find any info on how to do that.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Not quite successful...
I have created a new folder called skin 1. Placed contents of downloaded theme within (Nik_RokR_Envy theme). Cannot select any but onyx on last step.
I then tried the thememanager software. This set up a new selection for me under change theme but with glitches such as old wallpaper around interface items and odd folder icons in wallpaper selection.
I seem to be missing something at the step of how the contents are organized under the "skin1" folder. Nik_RokR_Envy comes with wallpaper folders and a couple others. Should all files be on same level, except the svg folder files?
BTW, have 06a5 flashed to membersrequest FW.
Thx - this site kicks ASS!

For install skins/themes on your E8, EM30, U9, ZN5 any motomagx, you don't need to flash your phone, you can easy install your themes with Theme Manager, connect your phone in Modem mode, open the program, wait until the program load your phone, then just upload your skin, reboot your phone and change your theme in Themes Option
thats all.

Hi, thanks for your reply.
I've now got theme manager working, and can transfer skins across. Unfortunately, I'm still having some issues, those being:
-Theme manager doesn't make a new skin available (in themes>>create new>>choose skin). Instead, it just creates a new theme with the new skin already set. If I want to change the skin associated with a theme, I can still only choose 'Onyx' (the default).
-Backgrounds aren't showing properly - setting a new one results in a black background typically, which shows traces of the 'ROKR' default background whenever an onscreen control uses transparency.
Any ideas why?
Thanks.
