I called AT&T technical support, told them my phone's IMEI number and got a subsidy code... so it's unlocked now and im happily joining this community of modders
you can change the imei on any phone if you know how, but its illegal. in some cases, if you give the imei number to your carrier they will give you the unlock code for the phone
I did a stupid thing - I tried to update my software on my unlocked v3re using Motorola Software Update. I did this before running Motorola Driver Installer - not sure if that makes a difference but I am guessing it probably does.
After the update, my phone was reset to the original provider - T-Mobile USA and was asking for the subsidy password.
I got the phone in Canada and am now in Australia - neither are tmobile markets - and I am using virgin mobile here.
after some internet research learning about unlocking phones I tried to call tmobile USA - they said 'no, try the internet' - yeah thx for nothing.
then I tried virgin mobile but they couldn't (or wouldn't help)
I tried tmobile usa again - explained that I got the phone in a non-tmobile market and am still in a non-tmobile market and she took my IMEI and email and a day later I had the code! And it worked! There was no reason they had to accept my explanation but they did so I am happy about that.
One question: if I update my software again, and my phone locks again - will I be able to use the subsidy code that tmobile gave me again? Or is it like a one-time or limited thing? If so, how might I know?
